Grit lorries

Would driving on a freshly gritted roads cause havok flicking up at your paint? Are they as hard as driving on a road with loose chippings?

Holy thread revival. I got hit by a grit lorry today. Slowed down to a crawl and went right on the edge of the road and was okay. Further down the road on a sweeping left hander a lorry throws a lump of rock salt up in my windscreen and now I have a 6 inch crack thats only going to get bigger. Anyone fought the council on this issue for some compensation?

The only thing I have going for me is that I know the time the gritter passed me which corresponds with when I was hit and they must have some tracking system to know which gritters are out and where they are going?

*missing the point where you can't just take another road, to set off earlier/later in order to miss the lorry*

I've encountered a couple on motorways at night and I just over take them at junctions (fly up the slip road and straight down the next before the lorry gets there :) the)

How? You usually have to negotiate a roundabout or traffic lights? The gritter must be going really slow. :p

It's just salt, not grit, and smaller than it used to be isn't it? Shouldn't be causing paint work damage let alone a broken windscreen..

It's simple.
Ban grit lorries.
Then you'll have nice shiny paintwork to admire whilst awaiting recovery from the ditch you've just slid into during icy conditions.....

:p

its called rock salt and sometimes comes out the spreader the size of a small pea, but the main problem is the gritter lorry driving to fast and firing it out the back n not just spreading it.
I have had a piece of it hit me on the knee while on my motorbike and I can tell you it brings tears to your eyes lol

Big hate of mine - although if you think the damage is too much complain like hell and stick to your guns , i did this several years ago after my RS Turbo was shot blasted by one of these damn things- complained - a guy from the highways came to look - paid for my bonnet ,bumper and drivers side to be repainted at the dealer:)

But if i see one i generally dive for the nearest gateway - even if thats someones drive.

A piece of rock salt did not break your windscreen.

Yes it did. I could hear all the crap jangling around my wheel arches at the same time of impact. The local council told me to sod off. I will remember to keep some stones handy the next time I see a gritter on the roads. ;)
