Yep, simple really!
From the sounds of it though, you'll probably not get very far if the game isn't even playing once you're in to it, but give the disc a good clean before you try installing it and hope that the drive is in a good mood.
If you have not ever installed a game before, from the xbox dashboard, instead of pressing A to play the game under "My Xbox", you should be able to go in to more info for the game. There is an option to install to HDD in there somewhere, and it will do it all for you.
