GT3 vs E92 M3 vs GT-R Autocar Video!

I wonder just how those ceramic brakes on the Porka are to live with day to day. Awesome stopping power on track is one thing but getting to the roundabout at the end of the road with a vague brake pedal because you haven't got enough heat in them might wear thin.

This is an open question rather than a statement as I have no idea how they perform when cold compared to standard discs.

I have driven a 911 at MIRA on Ceramics and was very impressed with them. They are actually no better at stopping the car in distance terms but they have a consistency that the steels don't and a feel to how they work that I really liked. They gave an impression of sharpness every time you pressed the pedal that the steels can loose after heavy use and this, together with their weight is where the savings are really made.

The big problem with them however are stones! Get a stone stuck in a brake and it can ruin them, and as this can be an issue on track days is the main reason people swap them out if they are going to do a load of track work, which I think defeats the object somewhat.

Great review.... thought he really really needed to empty his change/shrapnel from the car because it was really irritating hearing chinking of coins over the engine note!

Just goes to show that the new M3 does in fact suck balls

You are comparing a porche race car to a german saloon car capable of every day use, it is quite obvious which is faster. It infact shows that the new m3 doesnt suck balls because it is still a very fast and fun car. However from the video i can only assume the brakes do suck balls.

You think the stock brakes on your 530 are 'excellent' only because you've never tested them. Any discs/pads will be able to complete a couple of emergency stops and easily cope with the driving that you do.

Yup, try a few 90mph to 20mph braking tests. I bet the 530 brakes start to feel spongey after 4 or 5 goes.

Are they as immediately effective when cold as steels?

They are both road cars, but I agree they are not really competition.

I never really got to try them from cold, the car was warmed up when I drove it from my OPC to MIRA, then around MIRA's various test tracks and drifting sections and then back to my OPC, but the thing that amazed me is how they felt after a really hard work out, which was exactly the same. I believe they need little in terms of warm up and will be effective from the off, but will improve in feel, like the steels once they have a bit of heat in them.

I think the idea of the test (3 laps) is great in theory, but Harris knows how to drive a GT3 with some competence, he's a self-confessed Porsche fan-boy etc... so the time difference is not quite as large as I would expect if it were the majority of the driving public were to replicate the idea.

Here's another vid, this time it's a 997TT vs. GT-R:

edit: The GT-R is on Fifth Gear tomorrow night as well. Not sure if it's Litchfield's or Linney's they will be using. Also, apologies as I just skimmed the thread and after re-reading, housemaster made sort of the same point I did in his second post.

I know of a UK GT3 owner in another forum who has just driven one of the UK GT-R's and rates it highly and was amazed at how well mannered and quick it is, but also felt the GT3 was better in some of the areas I outlined above...

Aye, read that post tonight, he's getting rid of the GT3 for GT-R if I read it correctly.

There are lots of people getting out of GT3's into GT-R's, and in 6 months after their release there will be lots of people getting out of GT-R's into something else, its how people tend to work at the front of the queue for such cars. Get them first, sell them while they are still hot, loose very little, get into something else. He is expecting one of the first cars into the UK.
