GT86 is there anything I need to know ?

More sensible, yes. But I'm guessing he wants to upgrade his driving experience rather than the quality of his interior trim, or else he wouldn't even be asking the question. In which case, I think the Toyota has the edge.
A 320D is a fine car, but a 2-litre diesel saloon is hardly exciting or involving to drive.

Can't beat a jump between different car types/class imo. Gradually improving your stable in a logical fashion & in accordance with the brands marketing dept is awfully tedious 
I am trying to put off the seemingly inevitable decent into wanting a mundane silver or black German 2 litre diesel saloon. A few of my similarly aged neighbours have unfortunately already been lost in recent years to this affliction.
If the thread title had been "spec me a replacement for a 320D" then the response would be understandable and a GT86 would have course not even be a consideration. But it seems bizarre to post in a thread where the OP has asked about a specific car feigning puzzlement as to why it's been chosen, unless the only objective is to let everyone know your low opinion of the manufacturer.
I suspect this is the case, as I refuse to believe that someone like Jez who contributes lot about to Motors, cannot fathom why someone might choose a small, fun, high-revving easy to handle and throw about coupé over an excellent, but rather mundane diesel saloon, just because it has a "lesser" badge and lower quality interior trim and he therefore wouldn't consider it an upgrade

I would say this move would be a mistake and he should focus on changing for a sportier newer version of a more upmarket car.Depends what you're doing to be honest. In most cases I'd take the GT86, but for long motorway hauls, I'd take the 13 year old 320D. It will be quieter, more comfortable, and probably more relaxing.
No-one is suggesting that he shouldnt upgrade his car, his car is ancient and on nearly 200k miles with heaps of issues

So basically he shouldn't buy anything at all unless it's a 'see man driving a German whip' motor.
Anyway another repeat of the Evo dreamer thread it seems, pretty sure the OP said in another thread driving bores him and he penny pinches on running his 320d, yet now he wants to buy a 15k+ car designed for old school purist drivers.
