GTA 4 worth it?

I've just recently got a 360 controller for my pc and loving it with racing games. I'm relatively new to pc gaming. I play Black ops with the keyboard and mouse and couldn't imagine it with a controller, however I have always played GTA on the ps3 with a controller.

Just wondered what you guys use for the pc version, a controller or keyboard... what's your preference... would it be criminal to use a 360 pad?

I use the 360 pad for driving then switch to keys for gun play, best of both worlds :D. Plus the accuracy of the mouse makes head shots so much easier, I sailed through the couple of missions that gave me problems on the 360.

GTA4 is pretty poor. Yes, it's very big but it's so samey. San Andreas had lots of very different areas which kept it constantly fresh and allowed to do lots of different things depending on where you were. However, with '4 all you do is drive for bloody ages (or just end up getting a taxi or your cousin) and get a mission then drive for bloody ages to complete the mission, then drive back bloody ages to get another mission and then drive bloody ages to do this.
Yeah, it looks good but once you've got over that (which you do very quickly) it just turns into a right pain in the bum.
Waste of money.

How would that work with regards to configuring the keys... Wouldn't you have to choose either or? Well obviously not if you do it, but is this just a simple choice in the options menu or have you modded it in someway?

Sounds good anyway, if a little frustrating switching... Aiming with controllers is a pain.

Doesn't it auto aim? iirc and you can very easily / quickly switch to different targets.

Haven't played the game without a xbox 360 controller.

Bah! Stuck on the final mission. Can't tap 'A' fast enough to make Niko get into the helicopter.

Sucks that that's the only part I can't do, but hey. My fingers just can't press the button fast enough, and I don't have an auto-fire controller.

And before anyone says that part is easy, it's not if you have really stiff fingers. What sort of a challenge is "press this button really fast" anyhow? Reminds me of the old Olympics game on the Spectrum/C64 :p

Oh well, guess that's as far as I can go unless I get someone to do the button mashing bit for me :/

[edit: seems this is a problem for many people :/

I've heard about that bug a lot :(

Never experienced it on 360 or 2 different PC's though....

Do you use V-Sync per chance? I know that can sometimes do funny things. Also if your using a controller do not use your thumb to mash A. Switch to using your forefinger - much faster :p

From reading that thread, it seems people were having success using a FPS limiter, or FRAPS, to reduce the frame rate.

I shall have to try that.

Just up the resolution - quickest way to kill FPS I know of :p

Also how did you deal with the mission 'Truck Hustle' if your struggling to get on the chopper?

iirc it uses the same mechanic to have you repeatedly tap jump to climb onto the lorry.

Unless it is specifically a glitched mission....

If you check the thread I linked, nobody had problems with Truck Hustle who has problems with the chopper climb. Must be different code.

I quite liked gta iv, I LOVED the driving, the story/cutscenes were extremely boring compared to san andreas and Vice city though, and I thought the world was too small and missed the countryside...

That aside, it has it's niggles, but it's a great game. If you play vice city afterwards you then realize how crap the driving in that was and how much the game has grown. I do think GTA IV is a step back from GTA SA though, by far the most fun gta:
The world, the best story, the funniest and most diverse missions.

GTA iv has graphics going for it ( with the anti aliasing mod), the driving, and the messing about...

This thread makes me want to install it again and clock it again for the 10th time :/

That's it. I'm reinstalling first thing tomorrow morning. :D It's just so damn FUN!

VisualIV - Improves default lighting and visuals.

Car handling mod - Makes the handling bearable.

Traffic Felony - Makes police actually chase you if you jump red lights, drive on the wrong side of the road, smash into other cars etc. Personal preference really. Handling mod makes it easy to escape from the cops (speeds up cars).

Vehicles from Here

That's what I use, all work on the latest patch (1.0.7.0).

Thanks for those the handling mod really did make it better now the cars feel much nicer to drive.

I have just started playing it again as i played it for a while the stuttering drove me mad and then i got some more memory so it is much more enjoyable.
It is a great game but i was a little disappointed that they had removed so much of the fun stuff they added in San Andreas, i was expecting something even bigger than SA but it is still a great game and there is a lot of detail.
I would guess as everything is more complex graphically they did not have had the time to make it that good looking and also the size of SA.
It kinda reminds me of the size of GTA 3 which is not a bad thing.

I think once i finish GTA 4 i will have to replay SA again.

I would recommend GTA4 for the back story and then the lost and damned for a little bit more back story and then The ballad of gay Tony as the main story that links the other two and is utterly awesome!

I ragged on GTA4 a couple times in this thread already. Then I played TLatD and thought it wasn't very good either (and it was short!).

But... The Ballad of Gay Tony is much, much better. 100x better. It's a bit more like San Andreas in that it lets you do a whole bunch of crazy stuff, has a lot more driving and racing, and keeps the missions different each time.

TBoGT is hands down the best of the three.
