** GTA IV: It feels like a chore to continue playing SP mode thread**

Saints Row was terrible IMO. The dialogue in that game seemed like it was written by 12 year olds.

The dialogue and story were rubbish, but I did enjoy the game. I couldn't go back to it having played GTA IV though.

I really hated having to get respect to 'earn' missions though, that was very annoying.

You don't want to explore because of an achievement? Are a few gamer points that important to you?

If most of the places look the same thats because you probably have your eyes shut.

If you could tell where you were and knew exactly where to go without looking from the map on day 1 with GTA 3/VC and SA I tip my hat to you but I honestly think thats a pack of lies.

All of the cities are confusing and large at first but with some playtime and exploration (which you don't want to do because you might get 30 gamerpoints!) they become less overwhelming and much easier to navigate.

For example you could easily have done some taxi missions for Roman or maybe some police missions from the police car computer (the police stuff gets you Gamerscore too you know :D)

As for finishing the main storyline and then loads of side missions before jumps/packages for 100% I can agree to a point as there are fewer side missions but what is there makes heaps more sense.

Brucie wants to go racing, Little Jacob wants you to deliver drugs and Roman wouldn't mind you helping with his business. As I mentioned police work is available and aids you knowledge of the city and seems to be available in a much more realistic fashion.

I miss being fire proof and having extra health but I don't for a minute miss Fire missions or Ambulance missions - the way those played out made little sense. A heavily muscled gangster driving an ambulance of old ladies whos's apparent injury is nothing more than a cut knee to hospital for 12 'levels' was monotonous.

As for multiplayer have you actually played it at all!? The game will allow you to play in areas as small as Bohan and as large as the entire game map with no restrictions. Xbox Live certainly can support these large play areas and 16 players is quite frankly plenty for some competitive play thats still contrallable.

A point made by my father (who just happens to love the GTA games and has finished them all bar IV) also reckons from reading your gigantic, hard to read non stop typing whinge that your not really seeing the point of how the game should be played.

Side missions should in all honesty be started early and played often until you have the mechanics of the game sorted and can find your way around. By all means do some missions too.

Getting some of the side mission bonuses early on can be an invaluable help (Jacobs reduced weapons for example) as money can be tight to start with and you don't know where you are going.

Also with added exploration you can find plenty of weapons and armour lying all over the place and can therefore tool yourself up for free and not incur too many expenses.

Finally I believe (although probably not a popular belief) that the 30 hour achievement should be one of the last ones you do as by the time you have finished the game you will have enjoyed and experienced all the detail the developers worked on for YEARS.

Oh yeah random smiley so life feels good :)

You sound like you thought I was saying the game was pants or something .

After playing this since it came out I can say that it is partly fact that a lot of the places are indescript it is harder to navigate, I wasn't saying this detracted from the game, you seemed to miss my point as in real life it is hard to navigate and everywhere looks similar. I meant that it didn't feel like a GTA as a lot of it feels repeated, where as in the old ones (even SA) most of it felt different and memorable. Now the islands aren't huge, and I'm not saying after a few weeks of play I would know it like the back of my hand, I was just using the difficulty of navigation to point out the 'cartoon background' repition I felt I wouldn't see in a GTA game.

Now about the achievement, I thought 'I can't be arsed to play through this story again and doubt I will anytime soon', and as I had done most of the story quickly I did look around a bit but got bored quickly, and then went back to the story and did it in 29 hours. After that I felt there wasn't much to go and do for side missions, partly because the line between side mission and story was more blurred than in the old ones.

It has taken me a day to get from the end of the story to 97% (not 24 hours, I mean a normal days worth of play). One of the huge, massive, major problems here is the fact you get percentage for taking your friends out? Why? It is in no way a difficult task to phone someone up and take them out, why should 10% of the game revolve around taking 3 people out to do stuff? You say about getting Jacob as your friend for discounted weapons being useful but I have never used Jacob more than twice the whole way through the story as at the end you have easily over a million. I didn't get busted through the story so didn't need to buy new weapons, and as the missions were easy didn't die often (my opinion, I know some people found it harder but compared to SA this was easy).

As for MP, I have barely played it due to either the game or Xbox LIVE being useless and never letting me connect to rooms (until last night). In the games I have been in (10-15) it has been no more fun than SA:MP. Free roam is pointless unless it is with friends as people will constantly shoot you. All the competitive game modes are good but really don't make full use of the game (expect mafiya work perhaps) as you don't need cars etc as it just prolongs the DM and wastes time. I agree games on smaller areas are a million times better and the DM and TDM I have played has been brilliant (much better than SA:MP). It is just, having played SA:MP, I felt that this could be amazing, and it quite simply wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

is it fair to say most who dont like it have it on ps3
same ones who proclaimed it a must buy when ign said ps3 version was best
now 360 version is best and the ps3 fans say its not that good
just a observation from how it looks

Unless you count pixels there is really no significant difference between the two versions besides about 50dB of noise, infact before the different resolutions were known about 9/10 reviews stated PS3 version looked better to their eyes.

It's fair to say the PC version will be the far most superior version but it still won't help the somewhat lacking gameplay many have witnessed.

I cant get into it no matter how much i try to, I went to a midnight launch and picked it up then, and ive only got to about 13% complete as I cant stand being on it for longer than an hour at a time.

dying is a pain as you have to restock on ammo and do all the travelling again (I tend to get myself ready then save so I can just reload if I die) and it just lacks that 'must play, want to see what happens next vibe); It's just not an engaging fun game.

Agree the Save system needs an overhaul. Some of the missions particularly the ones involving a long drive or multiple parts need checkpoints and intermediate saves.

The restart mission feature is of limited use - why can't it restore your health, armour and weapons to the actual state when you started? More tedious time travelling to the gun shop/LJ to restock then make your way back to the start point.

I know some regard it as cheating, but with all the travelling, complex missions and the fact the game encourages you to proceed straight from one mission to another (in some cases enforces it), a free save facility such as Doom or Quake 2/4 would be handier.

PS3 version looks better and has a steadier framerate.

Xbox version has smoother edges and a slightly higher peaking framerate.

That's all thats in it while testing my versions.

Just finished it now, what a slog that was, didn't have the addictive nature of the previous games imo.

im in this boat too

I know the GTA missions are a bit repetitive, but i still thoroughly enjoy it. The attention to detail, and the ammount you can do in the city apart from the missions is what gave it rave reviews i think

I reckon (in my oppinion) that reviewers, being reviewers didnt set about completing the game. They just got drawn in by the depth of the city. The fact you can watch TV in your apartment, the way people go about their business and NPCs nick each others cars and get itno fights. The fact you can call the cops to come arrest said NPCs etc..

It all adds to the feeling that its a real city your in. The accuracy of places like Time Square etc.. all jus add to the atmosphere. And then you go off and start playing bowling / 8 ball / darts etc.. and go on dates etc..

I think the reviewers got so carried away by all this, they didnt have time to notice the missions were repetitive.

The repetitive missions dont put me off though, i still thoroughly enjoy it.

Ah, forgot about the Wii :p.

Burnout Paradise was a massive disappointment as was Devil May Cry 4, and not it appears GTAIV is doing the same (although perhaps not to the same degree).

Finished it and I can understand why this got a 10. Easily the best game I've played all year.

 unless it's the only game you've played this year :p
Bioshock F.T.W. (yeah I know that was out last but he said "played", and beside I only got my console February this year ;))

I only get cabs to the missions that would take longer than 5 real-world minutes to drive to, which is about 70% of them. If I have a cop car, or a good song is on I don't mind it sometimes though.

Also, having the ability to just skip the ride is too much of a temptation when you're across the other side of the city, on foot, and you need to get back somewhere. If they'd made it un-skippable I think it would have kerbed some/all of the temptation to "cab it everywhere"

Well in that case, if you have it on PS3 send it my way:p

We have the edited version down here:(

And call mee a Graphics and Physics whore, but i just cant go back to playing GTA:SA and VC, I miss the way the people die and how they get hit by cars too much to go back:(

no you don't.

If you couldn't use the skip function with the taxi I would not play it. For Bohan missions you need the kevlar vest and you can only get it from the gun shop across the bridge. For me that would be too tedious especially since I have to spend a futher 5 minutes trailing some car after spending 15 minutes going to and from safehouse to weapon shop :(

Saints Row was terrible IMO. The dialogue in that game seemed like it was written by 12 year olds.

Everything Saint's Row gets wrong, GTA4 gets so, so right. However, when it comes to tearing round a city, getting into 10 car pileups and shooting it out Heat stylee in the streets, Saint's Row > GTA4 from a height.

The attention to detail and the atmosphere in GTA4 is the best seen in a game of this type, but the pick up and play, balls to the wall excitement has been borked.
