Whilst I don't agree with calling everyone a moron, everyone knows that games rarely use more than 2 cores and you have to base your choice on that knowledge.
I have never regretted getting a 2550K 2 and a half years ago.

But in the long run the i7 will have a longer life and thus save money over an i5. This is no an assumption, it's just the way it is. Far Cry 4 uses all 4 cores and then the HT cores too as and when needed:
I had a 23500K at 4.3GHz and upgrading to the 3770K has seen a benefit in both games and Windows apps.

Yes, people will just buy it online or from other retailers.

Because the 3770k is a newer CPU.
I've actually gained FPS (only about 1/2) in Far Cry 4 by disabling HT on my 2600k.
I guarantee you that HT will not help you by the time that CPU is a few generations old. I still stand by the fact that the money saved not getting an i7 will get you a much better GPU, giving you a much better system. The difference in price can almost get you a GTX 980 over a GTX 970. No doubt a 3570k + GTX 980 is a better system than a 3770k + GTX 970 for gaming.

Add Crysis 3 to the list of games that can use plenty of cores.
I certainly noticed a difference going from a 2500k to a 2600k with 'only' two cards too, just as I did with BF4.

I went from a 2500k to a 4770k and at the time had SLi 780's and noticed no real gains.
I now have a 4.8ghz 4770k and a 980 and Far cry 4 is a stutteey mess @ 1440p. It's the same if I use my 290 as well. It's a badly ported game in my opinion as it runs really nice on PS4.

Generally speaking, you wouldn't really notice the difference between i5/i7.
In certain games and with mulitple cards though, it sometimes can. Sometimes, the difference is just a few more fps that you'd never see without a counter. Other times, it's the difference between a smooth game and a not quite so smooth game.

It was a £100 difference selling the 2500K and buying the 3770K, it was pretty much a no brainer and benefited all round. Lower temps from lower volts, higher OC etc.

All games (games that are coded properly) are GPU bound. So the 2500k should perform the same as the 4770k, realistically. Maybe there's 2-3 FPS in it but that's not noticeable.

Yup that is how I look at it too, the money I save with going i5 instead of i7 means I can put that money towards other items, which will benefit myself and my usage far more.

I don't recall ever saying an i7 was better than an i5 for gaming, I just said that if you can afford to get an i7 and will utilise it, get one.

I'm just saying, buying an i5 and a better GPU is money better spent than buying an i7 and a worse GPU.
There are very few reasons to buy an i7, and gaming is not one of them.

All depends on the silicone lottery. My 2700K is running at 5Ghz on a Corsair H80i.
Whereas my 2550K requires a stupid amount of volts to go above 4.6Ghz. All down to luck.
