gta4 *moan*

I disagree, it runs fine on my system, it runs better then it does on 360, and with a 360 pad for my pc it's nothing short of a joy to play.

I think it's one of the best games made for a long time, and I enjoyed playing it immensely.

sorry to hear you had problems with it, or didn't like it.

I'm a framerate whore unfortunately. It's playable on my e6300 and 8800, but not enjoyable for me. I would need steady 35 fps minimum to be satisfied, and my old CPU seemed to be a big bottleneck. I'll dig it out when I next upgrade, but GTA4 is the only game I've struggled with so far, although, to be fair, I'm not a massive gamer.

I don't get why people are so hung up on what framerate they're getting.

A couple of years ago, I stopped worrying about what numbers were flashing on the screen.

If it seemed OK, it was OK. That may be an average 20fps, but if it felt OK, and wasn't stuttering, then I'm happy.

In fact, since doing that, I've been able to enjoy my gaming much more - and I've not spent out as much on chasing numbers!

My frame rate is more then playable. I very rarely notice my frame rate.
You're not a massive gamer but you're a frame rate whore ? :p

I'm a big gamer, and while frame rates do affect and annoy me, GTA IV is more than playable, and is such a fantastic game.

Utterly agree. Great game, and as you point out much better than the console versions (I have a 360 as well). I've said before, if you do happen to think it's not that good on the PC, go out of your way to see it on a PS3. You will be shocked.

Xbox 360 graphics are pants , Played GTA IV on it for around 1 week due to my motherboard malfunctioning. Got my Mobo back - Loaded GTA IV at 1920x1200 and WOW! The graphics are 10X better than 360 + i found it more entertaining.

Depends really if your a console fan or PC...

That has nothing to do with it at all.

I'd have a console if the games I played were available on console and not on PC.

If the game is available on PC, typically it'll have the potential to look & play better on a PC - due to the often faster/newer hardware available, and better resolutions.

Anyone dismissing PCs OR consoles in preference of the other without taking a good look at the merits of either is just narrow-minded. Both have their place, and both are there for a reason.

well after my initial misgivings, i'm really getting into it now. it runs like a dog in some spots. i know they're are many people who wouldn't put up with the performance i'm getting but i'm getting used to it. luckily it seems to run the most poorly when i'm not on a mission or on a really easy mission.

i've been playing it non-stop all day yesterday and pretty much all day today. it's got me hooked. i'm hoping i'll get it finished later (just the storyline obviously).

You'll laugh... but GFWL doesn't seem to be neccessary to actually play the game. You're forced to accept and update it at install, but since I've installed there's been an update which I haven't bothered with, so it's says I'm not connected to GFWL while I play GTA. :D

And the social club is only neccessary to play online, so i've never bothered to create a login for that either.

And then there's the activation. DRM when I've already downloaded it through steam??

Nice going rock*. Give us more hoops to jump through next time ;)

i love you crowk x

It looked sluggish, so I (unsuccessfully) used the timedemo function to try and tweak it to an acceptable level. I'm not sure how you inferred that I was chasing numbers, but I know that 35 fps is perfectly adequate, but if it doesn't give me cause for concern then I'm not going to check.

It seemed playable from the perspective of someone who doesn't mind some choppyness. Not OK, or enjoyable for me.

I've got a PS3 and I wasn't that impressed with GTA4 on that either.

Your PC is significantly quicker than mine. I just want the games that I do play to run nicely. GTA4 is the first game that has had issues that couldn't be solved by turning down the graphics a little. I'll dig it out when I next upgrade as I love the GTA series.

86 top reviews say otherwise :)

GTA IV runs very well on my PC, I've had zero problems with it. My frames are good.
If your system is dated, and you're trying to play such a high spec game, you might as well not bother and save yourself the "omg can't play with these frames", Crysis evoked a similar reaction. Upgrade, or buy it on a console, it's a fantastic game.

( I didn't have any problems with the Social club / windows live, both of which I hate )

If you don't play it, you're missing out on one of the best games in recent years. You lose.

I'm sure it's great, it just makes not being able to play it with decent frames more annoying. I've never liked GTA on consoles, it runs like arse, and looks terrible (couldn't even see the map properly in San Andreas). I'll play it when I upgrade, but I'm not going to rush over a lazy console port.

Graphics stunning? Yes if you can ignore the awful shadows and extremely noticeable lack of AA it is quite pretty at times.

Yes, it is such a darn shame that they couldn't impement some proper shadows and AA for the PC version. With those two things fixed it would be quite the looker.

I don't think it's a "bad" console port, I think it's much better on PC, you also get a video editor :)
It's a bit like Crysis, a lot of people would need an upgrade to play this on higher settings.

I don't think it looks "bad" again, while shadows and AA would have been nice, well more of them and better, but I'd like to think it's still a very very good looking PC game.

GTA4 is nothing like Crysis IMHO. Crysis was ahead of its time, GTA4 is just coded by muppets. It doesn't look good enough to justify the specs, particularly the CPU power that the AI seems to drain. Shadows and AA are the minimum I expect from a respectable PC port.

Anyway, the PC version should be significantly better than the console version due to the massive increase in memory, processing power and graphics capability, combined with the fact that it came out later.
