GTS512MB on X38 - External Power Required?

thanks for the help.
yes the gts 512 is the new G92 variant and is specedd as pcie 2.0.

not a major issue but it would have been nice if the board could have supported it alone - looks like theres 0 chance of that.

someone mentioned that there are two types of external gpu power '6 and 8 pin.' does a corsair hx 520 have both? cos thats whats on its way to me. is there now a standard for gpu external power moving forward.

I dont know if it will work or not, but, does no one else remember the JOY of the old high power AGP cards that didnt have a external connector?
eg, take 1 GF2 PRO, mix in the volt mods for ram+gpu, run for extended periods, discover it wasnt *perfectly* seated and now you only have about 1/4 of the gold pads left due to the overheating..
or, run it up puff of smoke, bye bye motherboard v-reg.

i for one am happy with external connectors :P

Sorry confused myself but it still stands anyhow about extra power, the card is a refresh of the old GTS nothing major.

Except the G92 and RV670 refreshes are supposedly PCI-E 2.0, as i have said many times, and 512MB GTS = G92 core

thus as you said, PCI-E 2.0 card in a PCI-E 2.0 motherbaord shouldnt need the external power.....

Maybe they need too much power? Unlikely, but it is a shame they cant be run without the extra plug
