GTX 1070 Upgrade?

Even if they dropped £100 it's worth waiting unless the card someone currently has is ruining their gaming experience, if it's just "beginning to struggle" like in the OP's case then I'd agree with Stu999 and would just wait; if you've waited 4 years then what's another 3.5 months to wait for another card you'll likely keep for another 3-4 years.

Doesn't seem like it will be 3-4 months though. If they aren't released until August/September and will be hardly available?

I guess it's a cycle.. there's always something better that you'll wait for.

My second question is whether or not a 2070S will cause my CPU to be a bottleneck?

I still think it’s a waste of money but it’s your choice.
+1

Just lower settings for now and be ready to pounce when the card is released. I am confident I will be able to get one on release as long as there is a decent amount. Sure they may sell out in a day or two but I will pre-order or buy within minutes of release. If the card turns out to be a turd I can always send back for a refund before opening the box based on reviews.

That said, it would be better for me if he clears out old stock that is the 2000 series to make way for my new shiny 3000 series card :p

Hi all,

Some advice on this - I'm currently using a GTX 1070 on a 4k monitor @ 3840x2160 and it definitely feels like it's beginning to struggle.

I'm looking to upgrade but unsure what to. I have my eye on a Gigabyte 2080 SUPER. But contemplating whether or not this is a big enough upgrade to justify the cost?

Any advice appreciated.
I'm in a similar situation, 1070 and 1440p/gsync and on Warzone with low settings I'm getting aroud 74fps (I am currently cpu bound a 4690k but the 3600 is downstairs waiting for the x570 Tomahawk to put it in).

2070super are around £500 and 2060super are £400 which are acceptable for a gpu but in 4 months time will be pretty low end in comparison.

Its a tough one, wait and struggle or buy a higher end 2000 series and sell it to offset the difference in a 3000 series...

I've been waiting over a year to upgrade my 1070ti and will continue waiting till the new cards are out since the current 2000 series cards are poor performance for the price and the ray tracing isn't good either and tanks performance even more.

I had to stop myself buying the 2070 super around xmas when they were £435 now they are going for £500 so definetly not worth it now.
Damn, missed them at that price, although to be fair I wasn't looking back then.

But since you wouldn't be buying a 3000 series the availability doesn't matter to you, as when they are released the price of the 2000 series must drop (no-one is going to sell a comparative 2080S/Ti card for the same price as a 3000 series card) and since you're buying a 2000 series card the price impact will be ready for August/September, or whenever the 3000 series arrives. You could even get a much cheaper on in the Members Market from other people upgrading if you wanted to go second hand, as there's always people flogging old gear when it's new-hardware time.

I guess it's a cycle.. there's always something better that you'll wait for.
That's true, as always; but in your case you've had a graphics card for 4~ years, another 3.5 months or so is not much more to wait when you're just now "beginning to struggle". Surely you could wait a little longer and benefit from the price drop?

Your call of course, I won't mention it further - I just doesn't think it's a good idea is all.

Exactly. Why not by at the start of the cycle and enjoy something new. Plus get the benefit of a hugely improved RT? These cycles are like 18-24 months usually so not exactly small, buying at the start makes a whole lot more sense to me as you get the benefits of moving to a smaller manufacturing process which typically yields an improvement in price for performance, so you get more bang for your buck.

I personally think your mad to buy a 2000 series card now especially since the prices have went up. If its a good deal then thats fine but your buying at inflatted prices. i nearly bought a 2070s with free call of duty modern warfare (that i wanted and bought it alone for £30) in december for £440 now there £500+ with no free game.
If history repeats then your gonna get a very close 2080ti performance from a 3070 so your looking at £450 card with a current £1200 price tag

980Ti & 1070 owners have no sensible upgrade path atm imho you only have 2 choices:
1. Wait for Q3/Q4 to see what comes
2. Get ripped off with poor performance per £ options

Sorry if thats a bit blunt but that’s the reality

My second question is whether or not a 2070S will cause my CPU to be a bottleneck?

It would, yes. I got this 2080 just over a year ago when this rig had a 4690k in it. BF5 ran, but putting in an i7 4790k a month later was a significant improvement in both overall smoothness and minimum frames, with all 8 threads busy. So you'd not get the most out of a 2070s until you increase the 4-thread CPU to one with 8+ threads.

Now is not the time to buy, high price to performance and the potential for a large drop in value when the 30 series drops with much better ray tracing.

I have a 1070. I couldn’t justify a 20 series card. I nearly bought a 2070 super when ASUS did their trade in scheme but it was only valid on the overpriced cards so I spat my dummy and wait for the 30 series.

It's a terrible time to buy if you don't have to, bad supply due to slow down in manufacturing, high demand due to people working from home, ok they are not all buying high end GPUs to put Microsoft teams on, but there is a knock on effect.

Aside from the fact that 2xxx doesn't seem to be a huge jump from 1xxx.

But... It all depends how badly you want those few extra FPS and what £500 is worth to you.

I'm going to be going for a whole new PC but the Im thinking mid 2121 provided I'm not forced sooner, I'm running a 1070 but on a much older Sandybridge i7 system.

Mid 2121, hopefully this virus will have died down, Cyberpunk will have been out long enough to fix the bugs and hopefully the economy will be recovering.

Until then I'm happy with what I have.

hello mate,
i know it is entirely your decision but if i were you i'd wait until next generation, it is not that far right now, ive got the strix 1070 and sometimes i'm like ... yeah im going after new GPU, but after that, im like... NAAAH! 1070 is still alright for another couple of months,
well i dont play games in 4K really so i dont mind it,

you guys are very optimistic, even thought nvidia would reveal the 3000 series in august, you won't see the card on the market before September and the stock will be very limited especially due to covid19. I think at the very best you could expect to purchase a RTX 3080 around December. When it comes to technology you should never wait, there's always something new coming around the corner and you'd be waiting forever. If in the next 5 months you plan to play titles that would struggle with the 1070 then upgrade now, however i would go for the 2070, £300 more for 9fps +/- difference is a lot, then you can always sell it and buy a new card later

you are very right mate.... i am like... if you would wait for something tech- related you could wait all your life and wont get what you want...

Sometimes you should definitely wait. This forum has seen many people with buyers remorse. Imagine paying full price for a 2080Ti the week before the 3080Ti launched, you'd be properly miffed :p

Too late he already got a 2070S :p

This will definitely happen. Seen it many times here. Worse yet some people here even tell people asking why wait, life is short etc. Lol.

What I have have found consistently is people making threads asking these questions have already made their minds, they are just hoping to get someone to agree with them so they feel reassured or something. As I said before, the more people who buy the old gear to clear the inventories the better for us who are looking to buy the new shiny stuff :)

Hold on if you can for the next gen, ppl will say there is always something better around the corner, but you will be kicking yourself after seeing the cards come out after a few months after your purchase, most of us get it, whether we like to admit or not. This especially applies for the next gen ampere graphics card as they will be based on the 7nm fab process, historically these leaps has yielded the most between graphics generation, so expect a significant jump. i.e. RTX 2080 TI near the RTX 3070/3080 price point, who knows maybe the 3070 may even surpass the current 2080 ti.
