GTX 580 Review

Will one of these run ok on a Corsair HX620W Power Supply and fit inside a fractal Design R2?

My finger is hovering over the button but wanna check if it will actually fit in place of my GTX 260;)

Wait.

If you bought now & Cayman was a bit quicker, or the same perf for a few £££'s, you'd just be annoyed at yourself for not waiting...unless you want or need physX / Cuda support.

+1

Don't get why people are rushing and buying these cards now when the new ATI cards are/could be just around the corner and could possibly be better overall than the 580, also considering the price of them now, imo should be around £370, no more than £400 as I have stated before it is just an overclocked/refresh 480 imo and a lot of other peoples views as well, in other words what fermi should have been last year or given the name 485.

Does not make any sense to me at all :p

Unless as stated above you need physx or cuda or something which only nvidia can do over ATI.

Also it would be better of waiting anyway (for the people who only want the 580 and will not even consider the new ATI cards) as once the ATI cards are out, the 580 price will probably drop as well, so everyone wins.

It is a good card but there is no doubt it is what the 480 should have been.

Exactly. Have some patience and wait 3/4 weeks more. After this time period everyone should have much clearer idea on the price and performance issues with 580, 6950 and 6970:).

People say wait for the 6970 & yes, it makes perfect sense.

My only concern is what happened last time around.

I waited & waited & waited for the gtx480. After 3 months of waiting & since the launch of the 5850/5870/5970 all that happened was the prices went up. The 5850 went from £200 to £230 & after 3 months of wasting time i bought the 5850. The gtx480 then turned up at £400+ all hot & noisey & wasent worth the wait.

So right now, it worries how quiet AMD is, even now since the gtx580 has shown up, I would have thought AMD would have wanted to put people off buying nvidia by hinting at their performance & price, but the only rumour going round now is that their card is getting hotter & they could be delayed til after Christmas!!!

I worry about the same thing happening again as end of last year but this time the companies the other way round.

EDIT: Oops, i hit the BUY button.

Yup, agree with you.

However I would be really surprised if the 69xx cards are power hungry and overheating cards etc. as AMD/ATI are known to be much better than nvidia for that part (and always have been for as long as I can remember, more so since the 48xx series iirc) and I am sure that ATI are well aware of how fermi turned out last year and they will do all they can to ensure that it doesn't end up the same this year but vice versa as that would be an epic fail if it did (but you never know it could happen, but I can't see it happening imo and I would be shocked if it did).

Plus judging by some of the expert reviews so far the 5870 (I know old tech but still every new generation of cards should improve when it comes down to these extra things and not only that but they are using new architecture for these new cards so....) and the 6870 (again mid end, but still gives us a rough indication of what to expect from the higher end cards) still are slightly quieter, less power and lower temperatures than the 580 for some benchmark/testing results.

Plus personally if it where me waiting for the 480 last year not knowing what it would be like at all in terms of heat, performance etc. I would not have waited that long, after 1 month of waiting, I would have just bought a 58xx card as personally imo, the cards should be released within 1 month of each other and if there not then that's the companys loss as they should have known better.

So if that does happen this year with ATI not releasing theres within the month and not many reports coming in at all indicating a time of the arrival of the cards then by all means go and buy a 580 or possibly a 570 (if it is released) as I would do the same, but I won't have the money to buy one of these ATI/nvidia cards for a good few months anyway, so I have to wait no matter what :(

Just read another review here - this time SLI setup;

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-580-sli-review/

Funny how they all seem to want to defend the 580GTX right now - even though it burnt MORE power than a 480GTX; would cost you around £200 more than a 480GTX (SLI); and you would likely only get 7fps more than 480GTX SLI at Crysis!

I really dont see the value in a 580SLI setup

Wont supprise me if you would be able to get a 480SLI set up for ~ £500 in a month or two.
