so ive been playing with my 970 with msi afterburner.
Ive got the core sitting at 1600mhz and the memory at 3600mhz ive tried going higher and with more volts but it just seems to lose performance after this point

You won't get much performance increase at 1600 core. You might actually get better performance if you dial it back a little. The memory should be capable of more, is it Samsung or Hynix?

I was lead to believe I was safe to about 75c before it would throttle.

You could be right, my gig 970 g1 throttles at 65c and so does the msi.
Ok well if you aren't seeing throttling then what does gpu-z show in the power util section.

1600 mhz is a a good clock to be really, without a custom bios and a water cooler i can't get over 1614 mhz. But game stable I can run 1604 with 1.237v, however stock volts 1.218 I can run 1580 and that's where I tend to use my card for 24/7.

What voltage does your card need for 1600 ?
Also overclocking your memory will help to once you have found the max stable core speed. Here's the gains of mine from 1600 core stock memory to overclock memory.

running stock volts at 1593Mhz on the core when I increase the volts all it does is add more heat.. then starts to drop the score memory is currently at 3655Mhz

You should be able to acheive 4000 on the memory without issue. Samsung is generally the better memory.
Ive increased the memory to 4000Mhz still running standard volts.

I did notice a few artifacts in one scene so I might bring it down 50Mhz and see how it is

I can bench mine at 1604/4100 on stock volts (Gigabyte WF3)

I have run it at 1500/3900 24/7 for a few months, it performs flawlessly at that, temps are in the high 50's to low 60's, your card looks very similar to mine in the lottery so i would suggest the same 1500Mhz core clock for every day use.

GPU-Z doesn't always give an accurate readout, it certainly isn't with mine, it may have something to do with the fact that mine is supposed to run at 1253Mhz out of the box but actually runs at 1354Mhz.

Strange happenings with GPU Boost 2.

i use NVinspector.

I tried NVinspector but it gives me the same results it sames est max is what gpu-z is telling me.

so really it seems to be on par in fire strike for its clock. ( I think )
but in valley it seems to run pretty well when you compare it to the 1600mhz of Davedree's or is that me just wishful thinking...
