GTX 980 Ti low core clocks, low temps

Well, the BIOS on the cards is more or less the same on all cards. If that would be a general issue of the BIOS specs/operating voltages or temp limits other cards should be affected too. Generally you can also try to open the card and replace the thermal paste on it (just if you want to!). Generally this should not be needed but could cause "bad OC" if the TIM do not 100% fit the GPU.

Heaven, Valley the OSD you can see is built in the tool and not the Precision OSD. Do you not see the OSD in any application beside of the benchmark ones? Have you already tried a later version of Precision?

I am using the latest version of Precision. PrecisionOSD appears on the left side showing voltage power etc and built in shows at the upper right.
I only really play Squad Greenlight but will try GTA V later. I expect it is just game related (squad is an Alpha game, Afterburner shows OSD, Precision does not) googling I see many threads on Precision OSD issues. Maybe EVGA and MSI could work together on a universal overclock tool. Wishful thinking maybe!

Thanks

For Alpha and Beta Precision OSD do often not work. If you face released games were the OSD is not working just let us know and we will take a look into it. With certain precision versions the OSD was not working perfectly, specially when we released our in house design version X16 but with the latest versions it should be more stable again.

Ta. Is it possible to use new Precision with rivatuner stats server? Ie use clocking with precision and OSD with afterburner/rivatuner stats

This is an interesting thread - http://hardforum.com/threads/post-your-gtx-980-ti-overclock-results.1865303/page-3

Problem with the stock bios is the power limit would screw around with the voltage, and clocks would jump around as result. Voltage could go from 1.21v down to 1.81v, and clocks would drop 30-40mhz. My custom bios moves the power limit to 425w and keeps the voltage locked at 1.23v in 3d apps. Clocks stay locked unless I hit somewhere around 82C, then they drop 10mhz.

Played around with 1.255v, hit 1515mhz with an hour of heaven. Still waiting on the block before using any more voltage because of temps.

Getting my new fans tomorrow. Just out of curiosity guest. Is firestrike accessed through 3d mark on Steam? I would like to compare my score with yours before and after overclocking. Also when you say set to aggressive? I dont see that all I see is a chart type system, where you draw a line.

Yes, 3dmark is through Steam. Aggressive fan curve - this is set in EVGA Precision fan control (or MSI afterburner)

Hi, as it turned out I received a new 980ti classified which clocks fine to 1500/4000 at 1.21v. I have yet to see it throttle, even when it reaches 70c. The previous one would throttlw at 66c regardless.

I didnt end up using a custom bios or creating my own but may still try it.
You would enable it by using the maxwell bios tweaker and customising the bios, yep, bios change would work with any card

Yeh, 1405 is the highest it will boost out the box with power target at 115%
I would personally try +40mv voltage, +95mhz on the core and leave the menory. That should give a boost of 1500mhz at 1.21v

Do not use the auto fan profile either, have it on a custom fan curve - 30c 40%, 40c 50%, 50c 60% 60c 70% 70c 80%, 80c 100%
This should mean its quiet until it hits around 70c and not go much above 70c (and therefore not throttle)

After you have found the highest core, try clocking the memory.

That fan curve is super loud for me. I sit next to the case and it's not very soundproofed. I hit 1500 with it easily but only with that aggressive fan curve, otherwise it throttles. I also hit 1405 with +40 mV @ auto fan - which is also loud. The fans are just loud lol.

Maybe you have better hearing. I dont really notice the fans until they his around 80% maybe its my case, fact its under my desk near my feet or maybe its my broken ears from gigs and loud music.
How about wearing headphones for games then run it at 100%?!

Edit, i'll set the auto fan when i get back later and see what temp it throttles and what too

Yeah case placement plays a large role here. I hear them well at 60%. But my head is right next to the case so. Buying headphones as to not to hear a GPU seems a bit too much ha ha, but a good idea nonetheless. I must say I didn't notice very much difference in FPS between 1405 and 1500 in the Division - single digits only. If I have audible but bearable fans at 80-83C I don't really mind, it's a small cost versus the performance I get as compared to my old card. I should also mention the room has been quite warm, and having that lower chops off a few degrees as well. But summer's coming...

My Strix fans are set not to come on below 50c, and the maximum I have it set to is about 49% which keeps it between 69-74c, fans any higher than that and it's just too loud. although I do have my case fans linked to GPU temp so that helps to keep the GPU fan speed down with less of a noise impact.

That's nice! I think the Strix have the superior cooling alright (owned one previously). I see the fans ramping up to 62% on auto with the above temperatures. Case fans on the maximum. I would like to keep the temps below 80 with silent operation but that just won't happen it seems.

Told you something was wrong lol. Just didn't seem normal the temps you was getting under the fan speed and the throttling. Glad you got things sorted!
