GTX480 SOC off for RMA - what to replace it with ?

I like games at 1900 with lots of AA (8x normally) - and the 480 feels more consistent to me than my previous 570

all be it hotter and more power hungry...

i ran 2 in sli a few years back.
both watercooled managed 940 on the cores.

awesome cards
 
hehe - mines been superb I admit

but I can't even get it to run at the stock SOC speeds ! lol (ie 820) - without silly volts

never have been able to since buying the card 2 years ago

It wouldn't post at all. It was part of an SLI setup and the other card worked great on its own but this one wouldn't work on its own or show up as a second card to enable SLI. It was deffo the same card I got back as I checked the serial numbers.
 
I bought the same card, Buckster, and there's a very few games where running the core at 820 does produce artifacts. However, in my case dropping it to 815 almost always removes the problem. I think there was one instance where I needed to drop it down to 811.

Just wondering if Gigabyte will offer you something comparable like a 7870 or 660?

not sure - tbh - I'd just like a working 480 back :)

my core needed to be dropped to 740 at stock volts to become stable :( memory clocks were find out of the box though

whether I upgrade or not in mean-time is another matter - was quite tempted with a Gigabyte 7950 - but the fact the 480 cuts through most games recently - puts me off spending extra and upgrading

after giving up on gaming with the integrated HD4000 (no matter how convenient it is) - I've put my 4890 into the system, and I'd forgotten how powerful it was really lol
 
I bought a SOC 480 from here - exact same problem. Sent it back and OCUK couldn't find the fault (:rolleyes:) and charged me for the privilege :mad: Gigabyte on the other hand had it sorted in a week or so, although it ran over a weekend. I got the same model back, as it was still current

As the 480 is more than adequate for your needs, you might find a 7950 or equivalent a bit underwhelming. I have no intention of upgrading atm, it does all I need for 1200p. Once a few instances crop up where I can't push mods / titles as hard as I'd like, then I'll look at something else.

I had a 4890 briefly. I seem to recall it ran Stalker with a mod pretty well all considered. Nice and smooth. :)
 
My 480 SOC has run great since i got it. Can even overclock it for the more demanding games like Metro 2033 etc.. ( scary temps though ! ).
RMA center is just down the road from me ( one of the reasons i chose Gigabyte ). If mine starts to play up, i will take my whole rig down to show them lol....

That's like taking your rig down to the local computer shop, but in your case you get a bit more thrown in. :D

a week after submitting for RMA - not fixable :( genuinely a shame - as the 480SOC's were quite a special card IMO

been offered a GTX570-OC - which I've rejected - not trying to be stubborn - but I had a MSI 570OC - and upgraded (when the OCUK offer was on) to the 480SOC - for the extra memory (as the time more and more games were using more GPU VRAM), the extra bandwidth (384bit bus). I mean a 480SOC - was about parity with a 580 in reviews

another day - another offer - this time of a 570-SOC - which I've rejected

the tone was quite abrupt to be honest - and its very much put me off buying another Gigabyte product - basically they are making me feel like I'm trying to get a free tasty upgrade - where really I just want something thats equivalent

In many games I've played recently - I see the VRAM maxed out using all 1.5gb of the VRAM up and even in reviews iof the 570SOC some said - nice card - decent clocks - but betware - you'll possibly hit VRAM limits

I bought a 480SOC - for 2 main reasons

(1) 1.5GB of 384bit RAM (note even excluding memory size - the memory bandwidth is still a lot higher on the 480SOC than a 570SOC)
(2) the 480SOC factory overclock - 820 was genuinely up there with 580s

I personally don't think I'm being unreasonable

It was implied that a 580 would be too valuable a replacement for my card

the criteria for replacement seems to be based on 3dmark and Vantage scores - which the 570SOC is faster - great - if I played Vantage every day :)

what if I had bought the card for LN overclocking ? the 480 has dual bios etc - one specifically for LN. ? lol

I'm pretty sure (from their correspondence) - that they don't allow paid for upgrades so to speak - I suppose everyone would request it and it would get too complicated

re 2nd hand prices - not sure tbh - but when I started this thread I was seriously considering an upgrade- but after looking around for a few weeks and noting the stagnating prices (going up if anything) - I was hoping for my 480 replacement to last me till next round of cards come out
 
I asked a while back about water cooling the Gigabyte cards and got a flat response of "remove anything from the card and you will void your warranty".

For that reason, I will avoid Gigabyte and it took over two weeks to get a reply.

Sorry for OT but just pointing it out.
 
Stick to your guns mate! The 570 isn't comparable in gaming especially as you mention VRAM etc.

Just tell them you game as x resolution and bought the 480 SOC for the VRAM and bus width, i.e. a 580 is the only comparable replacement.
