GTX480 SOC off for RMA - what to replace it with ?

That is pretty bad imo, i had to RMA a 9800GX2 to PNY and got a 285 back which was a pretty big upgrade!

I wouldnt settle for a 570 either, specially as you have already went from one to a 480! Show them the invoice that you already tried the 570 and went for the 480 because of Vram.

Tbh i was expecting you to get a 660ti or a 670, they must have loads of 570s spare lol.

Stick to your guns mate! The 570 isn't comparable in gaming especially as you mention VRAM etc.

Just tell them you game as x resolution and bought the 480 SOC for the VRAM and bus width, i.e. a 580 is the only comparable replacement.

thanks - not just me then

thats what I said - not that I feel like I should have to justify to GB why I bought a 480 in the first place (lol !) :) - but they just sent back a table of 3dmark and Vantage Extreme scores - showing the 570 SOC was quicker than my 480SOC

I couldn't ever see it getting replaced with a 670, though maybe a 660 (non ti), which sits a little above the 570 / 480 stock models.

Its supposed to go off model-model though? Thats the warranty, you should never get a lesser card ever.

580 RMA will get 680s.

480-580-680 ect.

If they offer a lesser card like they are now for you its crap.

570 or 580, that'll more than likely be your lot. I agree with Buckster though, I wouldn't want a 570 that has less memory bandwith and less video memory.

If hes rejecting a 570 because of memory bandwith then hes certainly going to reject a 660 as it has an even lower bandwith.

no email from Gigabyte for a week now :(

main reason for rejecting the 570 was memory size as I genuinely think the extra .25gb can help in new games - memory bandwidth was secondary factor

I remember about a year ago Cleeecooo returned his to Gigabyte, they didn't have anymore GTX 480's in stock, so the card was returned to Gigabyte Taiwan HQ for them to decide what to do, and they sent back a brand new GTX 580 - RMA took longer but yeah.

Probally find the thread if you look hard enough.

yeah - they obviously don't like me then :( I remember that thread well

I think they are arguing that that because of less than a year warranty - that is an influence - but to be honest - I think thats irrelevant - its either in warranty or out of warranty - its not meant to be a replacement "to get by with"

:)

To be honest I would get a 660 or try and push for a 660ti. I moved from 480gtx sli to 660 sli and the 660 sli is slightly quicker, has more memory and runs much more efficiently.

Regarding bus size yes it only has 192bit but the ram speed makes up the difference. From memory the difference between actual bandwidth compared between 660/480 and 570 is negligible.

^^ Yes, although the 660 variants have an 'even' smaller bus, I think it would pull ahead in other respects. From what I've read around the forum, most seem very happy with their 660 / 660ti @ 1080 / 1200p and moderate AA / FXAA.

660 is faster than a 480 in almost every case according to most benchmarks I have seen. It trades blows with the 580 and really only loses out significantly in stuff like civ5.

well - phoned them up today - and they're not shifting - an OC'd 570 is the best they can offer

it'll definitely be my last Gigabyte product I own I can say that for sure - I tend to vote with my wallet

the replacement had better be perfect is all I can say- will be stress-testing it straight off on its arrival

I'll prob sell it on with my old Q6600 system and just move on - an EVGA 680 takes my fancy I think

hey ho

Don't let them budge on it mate. I had a problem with Acer once but after just over a month I got what I wanted. 480 fixed/580 or nothing.

my hands are tied - stalemate for a week and they're not budging

I have no contract with GB - I didn't buy it from them - so I've no recourse that route

like it or lump it I think unfortunately :(

good job I'm not an LN overclocker otherwise I'd be SOL lol :)

You have to take into account that by law, GB are entitled to offer you a partial refund leaving you with say £70 due to your use of the card over time.

From memory, it was the soc on offer, you paid ~£240(GB knows how much you paid), divide that by three years warranty= ~£70 a year.

I would either settle for the 570 and punt it and take your cash elsewhere like you said you would or ask them how much of a cash settlement they are willing to offer to put towards a new card-as you do not have to settle for a different model.

I feel your pain and grievance with Gigabyte, but at the end of the day, I imagine the bus/vram difference would only account for a small reduction on AA. it's not going to make that much difference being very, very similar performing gpus.

If it must be Nvidia, then the 670 can do almost the same as a 680, if it won't run on a 670, it still won't on a 680@1080p.

AMD can get you faster performance from(considerably) less outlay minus PhysX-but I'm guessing you are well aware of that.

The 7950 oc'ed isn't far off an oc'ed 680 at all, winning some/losing some while costing so much less:

1 x MSI GeForce GTX 680 Twin Frozr 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Assassin's Creed III & FTP Currency £419.99

1 x MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Boost Edition 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £239.99

Puts it into perspective really considering I got one the other day for £195 less than it's Nvidia counterpart, thank god I don't care what vendor I use, cheapest ones the winner for me.:)
