guess the damage.....

If the timing belt is snapped you would definitely notice the sound is very different. It's a very distinctive sound when an engine is cranking with no compression.

From what he described in his other thread, it almost sounds like there's no compression, although it could just be a misunderstanding between us :p

Does it sound 'normal' when it cranks?

Maybe too simple to be true, but it's not just flooded is it? Try starting it with your foot flat on the floor, and keep it turning to see if it gets going. Had this recently and I spent ages checking the spark and fuel before realising it was that.

I still vote crank sensor.

It will turn but never catch. When mine went it cut the engine (stalled it) then wouldn't start.

/edit

Didn't see you post above me :D

this is annoying but good....cambelts ok, checked plugs and they are ok, checked injectors and they are ok. started it up to see what else it might be.....

AND IT STARTED FIRST TIME!!!!! ARRRRGGHHH lol

cost =£0.

annoying as he couldn't find anything wrong.... :( worry is it might happen again....

self repairing or you repaired it with the power of your mind. either way, one of you is maybe a Jedi

Crankshaft sensor still my vote.

That and possible leaky injector, essentially it floods. When the fuel evaporates it will start again.

or the immobiliser...

I think if it was the immobiliser then it wouldn't of let him turn the key to position 3 and it wouldn't crank over at all, he would be stuck on position 2 - the same as when for instance you insert the wrong Ford key into your ignition.

Also, get your battery checked as well as it's possible that it may be on it's way out.

If its turning then its not the battery. If its turning properly anyway.

From his description the engine turns fine just doesn't catch which is pretty much certainly ignition/sensor related.

I had a similar issue, on mine it was the fuel cutoff was malfunctioning, which happens when you have an accident, so the engine wasn't getting fuel.
