Guild Wars 2

Quite tempted to start on a really quiet EU server to start with as this is my first time playing the game (never tried the betas)
Like that the starter zones wont be FULL of people, i prefer a few not a hundred and allows me to get into the game slowly...

Then after a week I can jump onto a more populated server if need be :)

I've been sat here reading about this game for about 45 minutes now. But, I'm a big PvPer, it's what I enjoy, but I can't quite find any information about gaining gear through PvP? I read something a bit back in this thread about someone getting Rank 10 but it swallowing their life, that reminds me of the old WoW GM/HWL Grind, and I don't want to be involved with anything like that, but I want to be able to play high level PvP as opposed to just casual crap. I've read that there's all kinds of brackets, but still can't figure out the progression system involved with PvP really?

Any other hardcore PvPers out there who can shine some light on it? I've been playing high level Arena (Quad TBC Glad) on WoW and I'm looking for something similar, I can't really work out how PvP works, it seems that it is often a grind fest of who can get who down first, with little to no "skill" of using certain abilities to counter or lockdown others? Sorry if I can find all this information somewhere, but if the PvP side of this game looks as good as it might do (Reminds me a lot of WAR for anyone that played, not sure how true this is either) I'll be getting the Deluxe Edition or whatever it is for the headstart.

Also, how well will my build run it? (Spec below)

Cheers guys, much appreciated.

Might try and set the Guild Wars 2 Facebook account to be on my alerts list, then when the predictable 'THE SERVERS ARE LIVE!' message goes up my phone will give me a nice timely wake up call.

I worry at times just how sad we becoming as I thought this is a good idea :p

Okay, I caved, bought the digital version, registered, linked my account and I'm ready to go. It's a good thing I love Anet despite their shoddy CS :P

The starter zones will have lots of people even on the quiet servers. The way it works is if a zone on say Desolation gets full, they just overflow onto other servers and keep playing. So if you pick a small server you will have overflow people playing in the zone too and it may not look like a quiet server any more.

OOooo good to know! Had no idea about that! :)

First thing to tell you about PvP gear is it all has the same stats. As soon as you are level 2 you get the ability to go to the Mists, in the Mists all players whether they have been playing the game for 2 minutes or 2 years have equal item levels and are upgraded to level 80. There are plenty of customisations on how to distribute your stats but the playing field is completely even. You then queue for PvP from the Mists. Upon leaving the Mists you go back to your former state before entering the Mists.

The only gear upgrades in PvP is visual upgrades, or looking more awesome if you like. They are attained in different ways, either through winning tournaments of which there are instant tournaments, daily tournaments, and monthly tournaments, the last of which offers some of the most desirable looking gear. You can also grind out some of the coolest looking gear too by entering the hotjoin games and gaining glory.

The game has been designed from the ground up with competitive PvP in mind and it is one of the more pushed features in the game, not having an even playing field is in my opinion one of the things that always held WoW back in this area. Where as an even playing field is implemented right from the start of the game in GW2.

WvW is a different form of PvP where your real world level and gear applies, so that is different and your PvE gear or WvW exclusive gear is what matters there.

Yeah it's a great way of doing it. It means that rather than the way some games do it where to prevent queues they have multiple instances of a zone, in this you just overflow onto the less popular servers. Which means no interruption to play for the big servers, and the smaller servers have more people to play with and makes the world seem less empty. If you do get overflowed trying to enter a zone, it will even auto-queue you in the background to rejoin that zone on your home server and give you the option of staying where you are or loading into the zone on your home server.

The only time this doesn't happen is in WvW, and that's because you can only ever fight for your home server in WvW and if you could overflow onto a different server (potentially one of the enemy servers that your server is against) it would just be strange, so WvW has a queue system rather than an overflow system.

I'm about to loose my mind! Got my new PSU back today (old one broke so I sent away for a new one) and I can't get my computer to work with it!! Spent the past 3 hours trying to get it to work :( I NEED TO HAVE IT READY FOR TOMORROW MORNING!!! :(

Thanks a lot, answered pretty much all of my questions, I like the idea of the equal playing field. I believe you gain skills (as in individual weapon skills) from using weapons, and that's the only thing that changes from a low level and a high level in PvP?

Final thing, should I get the deluxe edition for the headstart? I'm so tempted too, but I really don't know whether or not I should. But from what I can tell, cost of game + postage would be around £40-45 anyway, so it's not that much extra to pay, I dunno why I'm asking as it's completely my decision lol.

In the Mists all skills for your class are unlocked and available, everything is completely even.

As for the other question you do not need to buy the digital deluxe edition for the headstart, you just need the £50 version on their website. I can't answer the question on whether you should though, that is up to you. :p

My key on CJS site says pre_order and it cost me £40 and was premium when I purchased it, now, the same GW2 thing is just pre_purchase for release say and standard edition. Is there any way of checking what key I actually have?
