Guild Wars 2

4.) I think the server most people were on was the "Desolation" server.

I should just point out here.. it doesn't matter which server is YOUR home server as you can visit ANY other server whenever you like. Although this isn't active in the Beta yet.

For example my home server is currently Fissure of Woe, but if I wanted to I could login to Underworld or Desolation instead and all my characters would still be there.

Benefits from PvP only apply to your home server.. so if your server does well you get additional benefits.

Also, the bonuses you get from you're home server will stay with you when you visit other servers.

If I wanted to I could login to Underworld or Desolation instead and all my characters would still be there.

So each server doesn't have a separate list characters, like in WoW?

Since I quit WoW a few years ago I have tried Aion and Rift but they just didn't have that certain 'something' that I felt WoW had when I played 2005-2007.

Has anyone here played Rift or Aion and also GW2 and could you describe your experiences?

I loved Aion's art style and combat animations - But the actual game was a let down, the PvP mechanics, the flying combat, I just found it annoying.

With Rift I like the art style, it's very pretty, but also very similar to WoW in it's direction (Although it is much more detailed.) The combat I found standard MMO, enjoyable but nothing new or innovative. Overall I think it was the best MMO since WoW, but also the most comparable (Except SWTOR, but I don't class that as it was a train wreck of a game!)

With GW2, I absolutely love the art style, it's just beautiful! The combat is a good mix of the old, standard style, with the newer, targeted abilities - The dodging is a good addition, and I think will increase the skill cap of the game. The combat animations feel a little "clunky" IMO, though that may be down to lag, or just lack of optimisation. The story telling is absolutely fantastic though, best I've seen in an MMO to date.

In Rift, WoW, Aion and SWTOR I have top level characters in one or more characters.. None of them are perfect, but GW2 does tick more boxes for me than the others. I know this probably isn't very helpful, but I've had a drink and I'm very tired! :p

I just love how im not always clicking for quests and reading what to do. Its so smooth and easy to just travel around having fun and completing heart quests and dynamic events as i travel the map.

Well in this case it's Server vs Server. Each player has a home server. There's a special area of the game where players from your server are fighting against players from 2 other servers (worlds).

If your server does well, the other players of your home server get benefits (better drops, more crits, better crafting results..)

ah sweet cheers sounds cool.

ive got a lot to learn about this game it seems...

Thats good then, I thought they ment it was only once overy 2 weeks. :o

No...that battles last about 2 weeks.....after the 2 weeks a winner is declared and then the servers are matched up with 2 other servers that sit in the same skill level (basically balancing).

If your server wins then you move up the table and fight more skilled servers and if you loose then you move down and will be up against servers more on your servers level - keeps it even and the battles from being dominated by one server thats is better or more populated than another.
