Guild Wars 2

Just to play devils advocate m8, what about EVE online? That's an MMORPG, no holy trinity, no raids, no dungeon finder etc...

Are we to judge every release against "that game". If it doesn't have a certain feature it doesn't fit into the traditional MMORPG style.

I understand that many people have grown up with WoW being king but the king will soon be dead in a few years and the MMORPG genre will be redefined again.

Like I said, it's all about context. Nobody would ever compare EVE against GW2 and complain that EVE has no down level system or gear. So why should GW2 be compared against anything else except equals in it's MMORPG market?

WoW is going nowhere, just as most other MMOs survive today with subscription figures that were a single percentage of WoW even on launch day.

GW2 is basically taking cues from GW1 (Which was never a proper MMORPG as far as I am concerned) and adding MMORPG elements, not all of them - some of them. It will appeal to a bigger market and have better longevity as a result.

As for the definition of an MMORPG well - It cannot be anything but what the market has dictated it is. If you released a game that fulfilled it in description alone with no traditional (market dictated) MMORPG elements you would be laughed all the way out of the door. The genre will evolve, it will change but some things are here to stay and will likely never go away just because they are so integral to the genre working (whether we like it or not)

Guild Wars 2 is in it's own little market segment. It's not a full on F2P (Which as far as I am concerned are purely money driven, quickly developed and suck to play) and it's not a full on subscription based MMORPG either.

It will have PvE but not 'traditional' raid encounters or dungeons.
It will have a full PvP system, likely far more developed than the PvE orientated MMOs
It has a levelling and gearing system but it seems infant in terms of it's actual impact to gameplay and character development. It's just not going to feel the same as WoW (and comparable MMOS).

Comparing GW2 to WoW is like comparing EVE to WoW. They are so very different and having gripes about GW2 that are spawned as a result of playing EVE or WoW is silly. There are some bits and bobs that can be compared as a point of discussion but GW2 takes it's own direction. Whether what they do is better/worse or even implemented at all is totally down to the developers and nobody can really complain about it.

I completely agree with you, but I don't understand how that is relevant. The GW2 endgame (5v5 / WvW / Explorables / Orr) is still pretty murky at the moment and I'm not arguing the contrary, though I'm interested to find out. Unless you misquoted. :D

I guess it was just an extension of the previous argument about that guys video. I think his criticism's of the game are pretty unfair.

For one the no trial point is stupid because this is not a subscription game, that makes it no different to investing in a conventional game like say Max Payne 3 where you decide to purchase or not purchase based on reviews, previews and the hundreds of content videos available on youtube for free.

The gear plateau point is also dumb because nobody has experienced end game GW2 yet so we can't say how not having a high level of gear progress is going to effect immersion and the feeling of progression.

When I get to GW2 end game I will be much more open to criticism of the game, for now the main question for me is "Has what I have seen of the game been enough to sell me on playing it?" the answer to that is undoubtedly yes. The question on whether it keeps me playing or not is impossible to answer.

Those that don't want to invest in the game without knowing how good the endgame is shouldn't make hate videos on the internet about it, they should simply not buy the game until months after release so they can see for themselves and make an educated decision.

Very good answer, and only total idiots make hate videos about anything and even bigger idiots defend them/or argue their point.

Cool vid of Felicia Day doing an unboxing of GW2 collectors edition. She was a voice actor for one of the Asura characters (and the voice acting was NEARLY enough for me to want to play asura, but not quite).

She does geek and sundry too http://www.youtube.com/user/geekandsundry which has some great stuff such as tabletop, which is hosted by the great Wil Wheaton!

Oh, oh while we are on the subject of Felcia she also appeared in the "The Legend of Neil" Zelda spoof.

pauliukonis.com/miscfiles/legendofneil.php?id=101

It follows the adventures of Neil79 as he hunts for the latest indy games. Rated PEGI 18.

Everyone knows what a current generation MMORPG is, GW2 is an MMORPG in description but it's not the same as the current generation subscription based MMORPG market.

There will be no raid content

Just picking up on this comment, but for a very large % of the subscriber base in MMO’s, raiding isn’t actually something they partake of. I can’t remember where I saw it (possibly the WoW forums or MMO Champ) but only something like 40%-50% of the player base had used the LFR tool in WoW for example.

Personally I’m really, really looking forward to this – crumbled and ordered so I can play on the 28th (don’t care about the 3 day headstart)  Quick question though is there any word on how long it will take to level cap?

IIRC the leveling curve is pretty flat, so after around level 20 it takes around 60 - 90 mins per level up until 80.

Edit - I will try to find the quote - aha got it.

Eric Flannum: We regard leveling as a good measure of progress and not as the ultimate goal of the game. There is an amount of time at which a single level becomes useless as a measure of progress because you can’t make significant gains in a single play session. We are continuing to tweak and tune just how long we think that is but we currently put it at around 90 minutes. Since we aren’t interested in leveling as an end goal this allows us to cap our leveling time at around the 90 minute mark. This means that our leveling curve flattens out relatively early in the game. For example it currently takes about the same amount of time to progress from 79 to 80 as it does to go from 49 to 5o. This allows us to avoid the grind often associated with the later levels in an MMO.

Sorry, haven't played in a while, could a lot of the other % be, you know, the ones that don't need to use the tool and it was only recently introduced (respective of how long the game has been out).

Brilliant thanks :)

I think LFR was impletemented in patch 4.3, which was last year? But the % that haven't used it could indeed be because they are a raiders in the traditional sense, it could also be the % that hasn't used it are all the Eastern based subs and everyone in the Western side has raided via LFR, who knows! (However, I was under the impression that raiding guilds advocated the use of the LFR tool as it was an easy way to gear up for the "harder" raid versions. Hell didnt a few of the bigger guilds get members banned for exploiting LFR?).
