Guitar Bug

What mic do you use?

Its an Electrovoice but I can't think of the model off top of my head.
Its probably a lot cheaper now (£350).
Like in all wireless cases the pro's made me stay away from the £150 wireless microphones because of the quality.
I have the hand held equivalent and when you plug that in you can tell the quality difference.
Once again you need to spend upwards of a £1000 to get a proper wireless microphone with great quality.
I use Trantec in-ear monitors also which are a god send when standing in front of a very loud rock band.

Well, the Guitar Bug finally smashed itself up and died. I swapped it out for a Sennheiser Freeport (with body pack) , which sound control now do for £99 (they used to be £200+).

Just wish I could work out what to do with the massive cable that joins the bodypack to the guitar.. do you just stuff it in your pocket?

Go on, do it, go back to cables, you know it makes sense.
Just out of interest I know all the Sound Control guys in our local shop and not one of them uses wireless.

(Yes I do have a problem with wireless and since this thread started I've advised two young bands that the reason for their crap sound was because of their cheap wireless systems. I will not rest until guitarists realise they need to spend serious money on such items).

I'm meticulous about my sound. I've A/B'd it - I like it and it works :D

Something you can tell me - what are these boxes (where you can rip out foam to accomodate your needs) called? And where can I get them?

I bought the case from a the holiday high street shop (pathetic) and the foam came out of the In-Ear headphones box. It just so happened that Trantec must use the same foam for all their products and there was a microphone cut out.
The case I bought was deeper so I put other foam in the bottom and cut it to accomodate both transmitter and receiver.

Otherwise, buy the case (about £15) and buy some foam and get a nice sharp Stanley knife.

What, is the signal going to degrade over time? ;)

No, but your ears will get better and you'll be more subjective.

Unless you're going to pay the kind of money that the big guys pay, then do not use cheap wireless transmitters.
I reckon the evidence for this is the 100's of bands in my area who all at one time had wireless systems and now none of them use them.
The first thing I did when I joined the band I'm with now is to ask them to play a song and then play it with all three wireless systems removed and the difference was immediate.
Earlier this year our old drummer bought his £400 bass wireless sytem for our bass player to use and within two songs we wired him back up again.
Even my £450 microphone is not what it should be but needs must.
Every now and then I plug its handheld counterpart in and you can tell the difference.
If you pay peanuts you get a monkey and in the world of wireless systems £450 is a monkey.
You need to spend at least £750 now although several years ago it was £3000.

i have a shure headset which cost 400quid+, its spot on. all our band are old school and use cables. much better.
