Have a look through the sticky at the top of the page mate, a lot of good information in there. ;)

completly overlooked that, and i was looking through the gear sticky all night cheers :)

You could start with something like Alesis X-Guitar - H-S-S setup, built in "virtual amplification" and effects, you basically just plug in headphones and off you go. Quality isn't too bad considering £120 price tag, all you have to do is pick one that's set up properly in terms of action and no buzzing frets. But that's true with every budget guitar...

think i might be getting the squire strat complete setup from soundcontrol for £140 :)
I expressed my interest at getting an electric guitar to one of the regulars at the pub I sometimes work at. He mentioned a Squier as being a good one to start out with. If you get that one, can you let me know what it is like?

The thing with Squires is that you can buy one of the wall that plays every bit as good as its bigger brother the Fender Strtocaster and other times they are a piece of poo.
The Yamaha Pacificas on the other hand always seem to be made well.

+1000r. Cash Converters are goldmines for awesome Squier guitars :D

Squiers, as mentioned are still terribly inconsistent, in terms of build quality at least, loose solder joints and loose jack plugs are the usual suspects on them.

To be honest the best starter guitar I've bought (for someone else) was a proper ash bodied telecaster copy from thomann.de, arrived in 3 days and the build quality is very good, and the action one of the lowest i've seen. I since bought myself one and dropped a few seymours in there. Can't go wrong for 65 quid.

Thats a Telecaster copy yes? Don't Telecasters sound slightly different to the Stratocaster models? How do they actually sound different?

Telecasters are used mainly in Country & Western and have a very trebly twangy sound to them but don't let that put you off.
They're great guitars and can sound like anything else put through a decent effects pedal.

But I don't like country and western trebly twangy sounds.:(

Noob question but what is an effects pedal and how much are we talking for a decent one?

heres a good idea of what certain types of guitar sound like - http://www.line6.com/variax/collection.html

An effects pedal is a device that changes the sound of your guitar eg Reverb, chorus, flanger, assorted distortions. There are others who can give better advice on cheap/quality solutions.
