Of all the things i've sold on Gumtree everyone has asked for a discount, whats your lowest you would take, would you take this etc it's expected. It's why i always price stuff higher to compensate.OP did you use the shipping bolts ? Don't think you answered.
I think that is where the damage lies especially if they put the machine on it's back to transport or clean out any snow.

i didn't have shipping bolts and the guy originally stated he was coming in a van then turned up in a car. so i thought it would be upright. again he didn't seem to care about what he did with it or have a clue as he seems to think a motor, electric boards and wiring covered in thick lumps of snow is okay and would dry out with a wipe and be ready to use within 5 minutes.

No doubt if they had turned up in a van and the 2 of them carried it straight into the van and the same at the other end it would have fired up first time. They abused it the way the dragged it out and stuck it on it side to transport.

exactly...I've never sold on Gumtree but used to use 'the yellow paper' all the time, think it was called scot-ads. I'd be more surprised if someone didn't make an offer. Same with most things for sale actually...except Tesco etc obviously!

Maybe he is trying it on in the hope you say here have £50 quid back then he got a cheap machine, If I was to refund I would want the machine returned as there is possibly nothing wrong with it anyway. he could have buyers remorse or been offered a cheaper one or maybe he did knacker it in the snow who knows

Tell him to do one. It was working when sold and he damaged it. And rolling it around in the snow lol two men should be easily capable of handling a washing machine. Done it plenty of times myself.

I'd probably write this one off as a bad experience but a lesson to be learnt. I usually avoid selling things on eBay and Gumtree due to the number of unsavoury characters whom populate both sites. I wouldn't want to risk getting a baseball bat across the head, so personally i'd just give the refund and let it be.

Tell him to jog on, buyer beware no guarantees. He broke it he gets to fix it's not your problem he is broke.

The lesson here is 1. demonstrate its working 2. provide a written receipt confirming sold as seen & tested.

Op out of interest when did he hand the money over? before or after loading?

Yeah that's fine, the thing most people would object to is agreeing to a price and then trying to knock a bit off once you've turned up, I'd be tempted to reject out of principle in that case. I think it is valid for someone to say they'd like to take a look at it first etc.. but if someone agrees to a price and then turns up and for no reason decides to try lowering the price then they're time wasters... aside from perhaps if they highlight something that wasn't know/wasn't shown in the pictures/described in the ad etc..

I do think that for electrical items etc.. it is worth demonstrating that the item works before it is sold then there isn't much comeback once it has gone.

This happened when I sold an old £250 car, buyer agreed price over a series of text messages but tried to ask me for my best price when he turned up. He was shocked when I was prepared to let him walk away as it was no skin off my nose as I had plenty of room on my driveway to store it until another buyer came along. Maybe if he had asked to come and look at it first then I might have let him offer a lower price.

I've had various Gumtree buyers try to haggle in my house after having already agreed a price or pretend to be a tenner short. 'We agreed £X' followed by a few seconds of silence will make them cough up.

Have to agree, I have no issue with haggling but when you have already agreed a price, that's that. I always think if someones travelled to me already they're obviously willing to pay the agreed price. I just stick no my price and talk about other interest, only had one buyer walk away and he was a...

He looked over the machine and said it looks in good nick. It was pristine. He the .asked me for my best price to which I just smiled back. He then said would £80 do and I agreed just to get rid of it and then he handed the cash over.

I then let them take it away. But I was carrying the inlet pipe on it's own and watched them struggle from maybe 2-3 feet away. As soon as they moved it 2 metres they put it down in the snow. Then struggled to move a few metres before putting it down again and again. He then got tired and told his mate to go get the car and bring it closer. Whilst his mate brought the car he pushed it in the snow a few feet.

They lifted it into the car and I then showed them all the snow inside it and then placed the pipe beside it.
