If he sends the money and I send recorded delivery?

Yeah assumed it was due to the wording etc..

Although this is exactly how ebay works no? Why is gumtree any different?

Thanks for confirming what I suspected though.

Sean.

eBay items are shipped, you can provide proof of delivery. PayPal and collection in person offers no protection to the seller, as you have no proof that the goods were delivered to the buyer.

Gumtree is for deals in person, if you're happy to ship goods then sell them elsewhere.

They'll probably send a fake PayPal e-mail claiming that payment has been made and requires a tracking number for funds to be released or similar

Either way, it'll be a scam.

I'm amazed you had to even ask.

I just wanted to know how the scam works, he is saying he will send the money via paypal. Surely if I wait until money is in my Paypal I can then send recorded delivery with proof of postage etc.? How would the scammer then go about getting his money back? This is exactly how ebay works.

Seems the most likely.

It is only email required to receive money on Paypal isn't it?

Thanks

I was selling a £200 camera on gumtree and a guy messaged me saying he was a Pro photographer and needed it urgently for an assignment in London and could I post it there.

I mean what sort of "pro" uses a £200 camera..............

Cash in hand only for Gumtree- NOTHING ELSE!

I only sell cash in hand or bank transfer if shipping. Never accept PayPal as they can charge back.

I've had no issues myself shipping to people who pay in advance.

just reply that you'll post it out/have posted it and see what happens.

obviously dont send anything and sell the item cash in hand to somone else.

But may as wrll waste thier time :p
