Gumtree selling..

They'll probably send a fake PayPal e-mail claiming that payment has been made and requires a tracking number for funds to be released or similar

Either way, it'll be a scam.
Correct!! I led him on and this is what he did haha even though my Paypal account is on a different email lol.
Is it worth trying to report him? Obviously the email is no good but the address might be?

just reply that you'll post it out/have posted it and see what happens.

obviously dont send anything and sell the item cash in hand to somone else.

But may as wrll waste thier time :p

Hi,

Yes I have the email from "PayPal" but you can't have sent money to my PayPal because it has a different email address on it to my PayPal account.

Furthermore upon logging into my PayPal account there is no mention of an incoming transaction.

Are you trying to defraud me any chance?

Thanks,
Sean

I want you to know that the reason why PayPal has Placed the
Transaction on hold is because of the high rate of International scam
going on around the world do that is why they have taken a New
security measure against buyer and seller so that we can both stay
protected and secured , So the whole money is with PayPal but there is
a Temporary Hold on the Fund and before they will Credit the whole
fund to your account they will Need to firstly confirm that you have
send out the item to my address provided and Once they have confirm
the shipment details from you then they will credit the whole fund to
your account immediately, i want you to kindly go and send out the
item and i 100% Promise and assure you that PayPal will credit the
whole fund to your account Once they have confirm the shipment
details...

I bet people end up falling for it all the time! Might send him a random tracking number of google

Don't waste anymore time on him, block and move on and thank the lucky stars you came out unscathed. Anyone who offers to pay for an item sight unseen is a scammer 9.99/10, especially for a platform not suited for that purpose.

It always disturbs me that people like the op even ask. It may shows how many people fall for it and why it happens.

Agree, tell them you'll post after paypal, see what happens, then don't post ;)
I'll be interested to see how long it takes for the chargeback to occur.

Make your own fake Royal Mail email asking for money to release the parcel due to unpaid postage. Something like £15-20 sounds reasonable.

If they think they're getting a (almost) free camera then it's a bargain for them.

If you had to ask, when its so obvious, then you really should not be selling anything online, or probably even using the internet.

I just wanted to know how the scam works, he is saying he will send the money via paypal. Surely if I wait until money is in my Paypal I can then send recorded delivery with proof of postage etc.? How would the scammer then go about getting his money back? This is exactly how ebay works.

Seems the most likely.

It is only email required to receive money on Paypal isn't it?

Thanks
eBay and paypal are linked (not as tightly as they were mind) as soon as you post, you can put the tracking number gaainst your parcel on ebay.

Gumtree actually tell you on the site never to post anything, they have no system or link to paypal for you to verify the tracking number etc.

am I right in thinking that paypal "gift" transactions cannot be reversed ?
Tell him to pay by gift because you don't want to get hit with fees ;)

I was aware it was a scam, just wondered how it worked. Now I know they send a fake email from paypal saying the funds will be released when a tracking number is provided.
Am I okay to carry on using the internetz?

there are a couple of ways of scamming you
- One is the fake payment e-mail
- The other is reversals for non-delivery of item if you hand it over face to face (not at their address)
- Third is a compromised (stolen) account, looks legit and either some poor other smuck gets stung, or you get a reversal passed on.

ebay, paypal and gumtree were all one company but paypal spun off about a year ago, although the buyer protection is still tied in between paypal and ebay.

Providing you follow the paypal seller rules, you could make posting an item on gumtree just as secure as an ebay transaction no ?

some of the process is summarised in paypal forums like the below
Welcome to the forums, folks!
There are a few things to remember to help keep you safer when selling online. PayPal's Seller Protection covers the seller against claims of non-receipt and for unauthorized transactions, and applies when the transaction is listed as eligible and you ship to the address in the transaction details. See the full details of Seller Protection by clicking here. If Seller Protection doesn't apply, either because the transaction is listed as ineligible, or because the tracking requirements are not met (like in a situation of buyer pickup or delivery to an agent for the buyer), then it is up to the seller to evaluate the risk and decide whether he or she wants to take that risk. If your assessment is that the risk is too high, you can opt not to participate in the transaction.

(if I remember right) you/seller create an invoice in paypal, send it to the buyer and they then pay ..etc etc
you have not got ebay holding your hand, but the comission is not as large either.

99% of these scams are in the way of a fake spoof email as per the case here. Anyone who actually thinks they will deposit real money even from a stolen bank account or PayPal account are half way to believing the scam themselves.
