Haha no problem, happy to help. I forwarded the email to [email protected] not sue they can do a fat lot but every little helps! Have had a few more since this first one with near exact messages

Can someone help with this guy? Is he legit at all??
The guy:
I want the item to be shipped to my friend address in Newcastle and I will
be including 40 gbp for the shipping fees through royal mail next day
delivery service.

Me:

Yes I can.
I would ship the moment money will be on my account. Only bank transfer.

The guy:
Okay can i have your details for the payment now.

Then I wrote it will take around 3-4 days for money to appear on my bank statement.

So he goes he will do instatnt transfer.

Didn't replay to him yet.
What do you think?

I can send him a brick and keep thw money, is he really scammer trying to get my bank details and name?

Ever give someone a cheque? They have bank sort code, account and name on them. I'm sure there's convoluted ways to defraud with those details, or setting up a direct debit for fun. But it's safer than most.

It's usually transferred from a stolen / compromised bank account which has a number of issues depending on the context.

1) you can find it reversed
2) you can have your accounts frozen during investigation
3) you can be found complicit in the fraud and subject to police investigation and all of the above until you have proven otherwise

Ok. Thanks guy for some information. Better be on the safe side. Face to face like it was mentioned earlier. Sold via FB before and gumtree but never approached by shiping demands. If that will be less expensive maybe its worth a risk but my item ad is for £1400.

Just reading this because I have this same guy on my messages asking me about my camera kit. Same text and same email address (which is how I found this thread). Good to know that the info about this is out for people to find before they get stung. Thanks.

Yes, I have even had it on lego. All you need to do on the ad, very clearly near the top is state.

'This item is offered for collection only, with cash on collection and I will not post it. I am not able to accept other forms of payment sorry'

Stick to that, simply ignore any messages that suggest deviation (although you could deliver locally) and you soon get a feel for genuine buyers.

On gumtree you get this if your selling something over £200 instantly ... or if it's something big like i had loads for my old drum kit

I've tried to sell some stuff on Gumtree but am astonished at the amount of obvious scam messages.

Also, the bare-faced cheek of the ridiculously lowball offers (-30% to -70%) you get from some don't even warrant a reply - obviously they must be taking a chance on you being desperate for the cash.

Say it every time. But just shows how uneducated people are.
If people on a tech forum who, as a cohort, you would assume would be able to spot signs easier..can be duped by this how many joe bloggs fall for it?

No wonder it's rife

Just ignore the scam emails and texts asking you to email x address. You can state calls or texts only as they aren't as free as email but should weed out a few.

This is a totally different thing, but funny none the less

I have a small DJ controller for sale on facebook. its been up a while
Guy contacts me and says he will take it at asking
Great...
Then he sends me a picture of a bike and asks would I like to swap
I decline and say I would like the cash
"I've only got a bike mate"

on a related note,

I get the same scam attempted whenever I try and sell anything electrical on gumtree
Last line in my listings now
"No paypal. No bank transfer. No please post to my.....sob stories "

Thanks for advice, local guy came today and paid me £160 cash for the Xbox One S

Bought for £230 a year ago. I immediately sold the games that came with it (Rise of the Tomb Raider and Forza Horizon 3) and got £20 for each, so it's only actually cost me £30 to own it for a year.
