I remember playing Point Blank and Time Crisis on the original Playstation and having a a proper blast.

What options are there on the PS3 to play something similar ?

I do not have an eye toy as its an ugly piece of kit. Would get one if i could recapture the fun of Point Blank though.

Pretty sure you need the Eye and the Move controller if you want a light gun type game for the PS3. I know you need them for the newer Time Crisis games at least.

you cannot replicate these older games in terms of accuracy, the new tv technology does not work with old light gun tech, therefore they use camera's and sensors now which are highly inaccurate, meaning gameplay is not as good.

the only way to solve this would be if they invented a multi sensor or multi camra input system, therefore it would be far more accurate and gameplay would be better.

take the wii as an example using the pointer system is terribly erratic.

they only way to enjoy these games now is if you buy an arcade unit imo, the new tech has went backwards therefore your better off not trying it.

Just bought Time Crisis 4, supposedly like new with the orange Guncon.. used for like $35 all in.. So i guess i'll see how it goes. Not expecting to relive the older days mind.. But i can always move it on for the same price, should it prove to be complete poo.

I went to a proper FBI training simulator yesterday at a gun range. It was suppose to improve your target acquisition, from good to bad and play scenario's. It was just a projector, with some computer enhanced gfx, and some video. With a replica S&W MP40, along with speakers.

Anyway, I actually did very good, which i accredit to my old days of playing many many hrs of Point Blank, with friends. It was a blast. Since it demands you to act quickly on targeting what you're supposed too, rather than shooting the wrong person. I was supposed to be impressed with this fancy schmancy FBI training simulator, given the staff were all standing there, saying.. well.....what do you think!!!!! but really, I was standing there saying to myself, you might as well have chucked a Point Blank cabinet in the corner, for any good this is going to do. lol...... Anyway, that's what's bought all this on...

BTW i do have a couple of old guncon's from the UK up in my attic somewhere. Would anyone remember if they were regional ? I'm in the US now, but i'm sure i could bag an old PS1, CRT telly and copy of the original game for next to nothing. All under $100 I'm guessing. Which is what a couple of hrs on the FBI simulator would cost !! haha

i don't think ps1 games were regional, but you could do a google search. they were made on CD were they not? which led to a lot of piracy, etc.

im pretty sure most consoles could be made to play other regions games too (with some plug in cheat device) but you need to be wary of the fact that games may only work in PAL and US uses NTSC, therefore you need to make sure the CRT is capable of PAL, etc.

basically i suggest you read up on it all before purchasing

I really wish they could bring back Point Blank somehow. :(

i think these games only really work with an accurate technology, of there is none.

ideally someone needs to invent a new tech or the newer consoles need to have much more advanced camera/sensor systems.

these things cost a lot of money, therefore it doesn't make sense to manufacture something which will not appeal mass market and make a loss.

so it's going to be so expensive to produce a quality game that there is no chance of ever making a profit, no company in their right mind would attempt such a thing.

if MS truely wanted kinect to be the future, they should have made it a multiple camera system where you place a camera say in the bottom left and another in the top right of your screen, so now you have 2 sensor inputs and then use complicated maths equations to accurately depict where the gun is being pointed. obviously you could take this further and introduce 4 sensor inputs, one for each corner of the screen, making it even more accurate, but again costs have quadrupled from the original kinect.

So anyway, rec'd this game, hooked it all up, and overall i'm reasonably impressed. The gun accuracy seems to be on par as what it use to be on the original PS1 and Point Blank. Mind you, it has been 15yrs since i've played it on the PS1.. The Time Crisis game itself isn't all that, but the mini games / target practice games seem fun. Plus my kids seem to be really enjoying it. So i've gone ahead and purchased a 2nd Guncon, so they can do co-op.

Done a little googling, and its a crying shame that House of the Dead doesn't work with the guncon.. Most definitely not impressed with any gun games using the Move controller. 1.\ The big bulb at the end of any gun is less than appealing. 2.\ The triggers are always just pressing the analogue of the move controller itself, making for an unnatural feel. Whereas the actual guncon, (even though its a far cry from previous iterations) at least has a reasonable trigger pull.

Anyway thought I'd update, now i'm in possession.

Move sharpshooter > Guncon IMO but I dont think that really helps you with Namco games sadly

ps3ud0

The Shoot is closest to Point Blank I would say, requires move kit though. Its sort of a mix between Time Crisis and Point Blank as you have to shoot enemies but there are also lots of fun objectives and challenges that require shooting targets etc.

Yeah I actually went on a bit of a shooting bender this weekend ! Went out and bought another guncon for 2p. A move kit, the sharpshooter, the Sony pistol, house of the dead, time crisis razing storm and the shoot.

I guess you could say I like my shooting games :D

Point blank stands up today.

Short of finding a crt, you've the room and some spare wads, there's allways the original machines going for around 2-300 quid on the bay.

tempted many times, games just so much fun 2up.
