Gutted with my new 460

no they are not the gigabyte is almost silent it makes about as much noise as my psu which i cant hear.

you people saying all fermi cards are noisy have never had one, get someone who builds the computers at ocuk to reply bet they say the igabyte 460 is silent

My gigabyte 460 is completely inaudible, even overclocked 40%.

Nice troll attempt though!

Like i said, to some people it is inaudible and to others its more audible. People have different tolerances to sound... nice try at the troll attack but no you fail :)

Yeah the 460 a very cool running card, reviews show the MSI and gigabyte non-reference coolers to be very quiet so they are the best bet for a quieter system.

There's no troll attempt there, they are just speaking the truth, the giga really is a very quiet card.

I hate it when people say its trolling when all i'm saying is that people have different tolerances to sound.

Yes people have different tolerance to sound. I am very sensitive to sound, can't stand a noisy PC. I was the one that had a big go at Guru3d and kick started the whole 'Palit is loud as hell and the review samples differ from the retail product' fiasco.

Having used the Palit, Giga, and the MSI.

I can tell you now that the Giga is damn quiet, one of the quietest running out of the box cards i've ever heard (or not heard as the case may be).

The MSI is louder than than the Giga, and the MSI is pretty darn quiet (though it's profile is a little aggressive by default under load and can be dropped a good 20% fanspeed without worrying).

The difference between the Giga and the Palit/Gainward is night and day.

Actually i've gone a bit mad and ordered the MSI GTX 460 Hawk but it is supposed to be just as quiet but i'll be concerned until it arrives and i fire up BBC2

I've had one from day 1 (and obviously paid the price premium for it... not that I care). And if you can hear it (even with the side panel off and my PC sits less than an arms length from my right ear on the desk next to me) during gaming, then you must have VERY acute hearing (which I do... hence the childhood nickname "bat ears"), or have a defective card / fan. And mines clocked at 860MHz (OCCT stable 30 minutes) and will go higher. Though 1GHz, as already stated in another thread, is an MSI pipe dream. I expect it is on any 460, unless you are VERY lucky with the GPU. Only time the fan really spins up is under stress testing and then, like I've heard sais about the MSI Cyclone, it's more of a whooshing noise (rather than fan whine etc.).

PS. Don't wish to get into a discussion of the merits of paying a premium price for the HAWK, or over the performance difference (or otherwise) between other cards. Been there done that and fought off a couple of hissy fits from folks. IMHO I think this thread shows that if you want the quietest card (best?) you need to either be lucky in your purchase, or buy the best. Only my opinion of course.

I have to say i haven't yet received the MSI card but one of my initial thoughts about the gainward was how cheap it looked and felt compared to my old BFG 260.
The plastic casing and what looked like a cheap plastic red fan that did give the impression of being toy like.
Of course i wouldn't have cared a monkeys if it ran quiet but it didn't so back it went.

Regardless of my tolerance, all my fans are Noctuas. I can't hear my GTX460, which means it's at least as quiet as my Noctua HSF.

Are you saying some people will find the Noctua U12P, recommended by SPCR, to be loud?

I'd say the 'best' 460 is still the Giga, with the MSI Hawk/Cyclone a close 2nd.

Tbh all GTX 400 series cards are noisey, its fermi afterall. Some people can withstand noise better than others so to someone else the fan noise might be quiet but to another its unbearable.

That's not true at all. My MSI GTX460 is basically silent at idle and I've yet to get it louder playing a game or a benchmark.

It's the 470/480 cards that have the issue with heat and power consumption.

You have to remember though that the 460 isn't the same as the other Fermi cards.

The 460 is essentially a 'refresh' of the old hot Fermi.

460 uses GF104, while 465/470/480 use GF100.

Hey Mikeo i'm hoping the hawk does indeed turn out to be the best :)

Oh and i'm told it lights up blue is this correct?

Well mine doesn't. Though my Zalman cooler does.

You do get several red LEDs on the back of the card that light up as the power draw increases.

I'll be interested to hear the opinions of another owner at some point.

Out of interest, I wish I knew someone with a Gigabyte card to have a look myself. I so hate going just by reviews etc.

I'm assuming you are happy with your Cyclone though? If it's as well built as the HAWK version, then it stands out as a quality product. And that's based on all the cards I've bought since the VOODOO / RAGE 3D days. God I've spent (wasted?) some money over the years. Just can't stop my finger sometimes from pressing that BUY button.

PS. Was not trying to be rude when I replied to your post on the HAWK thread. Just re-read what I posted and thought it might have come over as that. Just my frustration coming through. ;)
