Gutted with my new 460

The Gigabyte is a very well built card. I was immpressed when i first got mine with the attention to detail and quality feel of the card compared to the others i had.. It has a Vrm heatsink as well and came with nice little covers over all the ports and connectors..

The only downside i can see to it is there is no channelling of the hot air out of the case

The blower style fans like the Zotac that chuck the hot air out of the case are, for some reason, much noisier than the HSF style that the MSI/Giga/etc cards employ. Whilst I understand why you'd want the heat removed asap, imo silence is a bigger benefit than case temp :)

Out of interest, I wish I knew someone with a Gigabyte card to have a look myself. I so hate going just by reviews etc.

I'm assuming you are happy with your Cyclone though? If it's as well built as the HAWK version, then it stands out as a quality product. And that's based on all the cards I've bought since the VOODOO / RAGE 3D days. God I've spent (wasted?) some money over the years. Just can't stop my finger sometimes from pressing that BUY button.

PS. Was not trying to be rude when I replied to your post on the HAWK thread. Just re-read what I posted and thought it might have come over as that. Just my frustration coming through. ;)

Nah mate don't worry about it :D

The Giga is a really well built card, as is my Cyclone, both cards packaging, and build quality are leaps ahead of the Palit/Gainwards.

I love my MSI, but I'd have to say the Giga is the better of the two (as it has a better fan profile from the start). Cooling wise they are very similar.

I've used the Giga in builds i've done for people, so know its a great card.

I got my Cyclone when the Giga's were still MIA, and even though the Giga is great I don't regret my decision, the MSI is a superb card also, you just have to adjust the fan profile manually to get it to the same load noise levels as the giga, which it will comfortably do.

Also, tell me about it with the spending, GPU's are my weakness, i've had pretty much one (and sometimes two) of everything at some point :o

Don't know if i can link to this here - http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-geforce-gtx-460-hawk-review/5
That's where i got the idea it lite up blue but i can see on the 2nd photo it has little red LED's.
The only downside i can see to it is there is no channelling of the hot air out of the case, hopefully my 180mm top fan will suck it all out :)

Emm.... I can see what you mean. Think it's being illuminated by another component. Both my CPU cooler and my PSU throw a bit of color on mine.

Reading that MSI slightly aggresively set their fan speeds, is it easy to adjust this down if required? Something about a profile in afterburner?

Two second job :)

My curve is the following:

<50C = 40% Fan

65C = 50% Fan

80C = 60% Fan

>80C = 70% Fan

I've never seen it go over 60%, and 60% I can't hear over my case fans :)

I think it's more of a case of you don't know what you are missing .

If you had a Giga/MSI to compare it to you'd never chose the Palit over them.

You experience is totally different from mine and I ain't missing nothing as I am

happy with my card ave no issues with it no noise, no squeal is that hard to

comprehend

Fermi > hotter > fans have to be slightly hotter.

Make sense?
This is just in general though, like hex said some are quieter than others.

what makes u think they run hotter ?

while its true the GF100 core is hot running and power draining, the same isn't true for the GF104 core

I would say that was a troll comment.

Really?? Yeah, I've seen a few Fermi troll comments around here:p

the fact that fermi is such a bad chip to manufacture they are probably already selling them at a loss.

Nvidia would have liked to have seen benched and as such it made the 470/480 look no better than the 5850/5870, they also pointed out in great detail how power hungry, hot and noisy they are, which IMO is a spot-on review.

RavenXXX2 said:
Nvidia need them new chips ASAP, GTX 485 anyone?

RavenXXX2 said:
they are loud because they get very hot, this generation of ATI card do not run anyway near as hot as fermi, as such they don't need the increased fan speed to keep them cool.

RavenXXX2 said:
The big problem with fermi is the powerdraw, it is just ridiculous the amount of power it draws compared to the competition, this leads to higher temps as well

RavenXXX2 said:
not surprising they are having trouble, and I'm sorry to say but it can only get worse with the state of fermi.

RavenXXX2 said:
How could they screw up so badly...HOW!

RavenXXX2 said:
Overclocking results for 480 at techpowerup, 5870 overclocked beats the 480 even when it is overclocked, you have to be mental to buy a 480

RavenXXX2 said:
Fastest GPU is the 5970, 480 is marginally better than a 5870 in most cases and that's just sad, if fanbois want to claim it is a win, fine, go play with your 95c at load, 300 watt power draining embarrassment.

Is that how you cook yours?

I dunno about the GF100 stuff, never had one, but the 2 460's (GF104) iv had, never went over 70c whilst folding, or over 60c in games, and these are both sub 50% fan speeds.

My 5770 runs a lot hotter then that, so the GF104's are cool running, can't speak for the GF100's though.

Fans were probably slower...

mame

Got to be a candidate for "post of the week".

Certainly made me smile.

Though lets be honest, we are probably all a little guilty of that at times.
I certainly hold my hand up.
