See it from her point of view..

Knows very little about cars
Husband is spending more money on 'that stupid car' instead of Christmas with the family

Its his hobby, its (no doubt) mainly his money? Without probining into financial's its hard to comment but i am struggling to see why she should have a say over something as trivial as a car choice.

If the car is resulting you in living outside your means then I understand what your Mrs is saying. Maybe having a performance car isn't the right thing to do when you have other family committments?

I'm not saying he should get rid of it, not at all, just pointing out her point of view.

That, bundled with a womanbrain* doesn't always bode well.

Update :

did some ringing round today and after ringing some local indies that blatently didnt want to touch it (sucking through teeth and "you'll know that'll cost a fortune mate") etc.. i came across one recommended to me by a taxi driver friend.

Gave the guy a ring and he was a thoroughly decent bloke. He worked for 12 years at one of the local garages i know, but left to set up his own garage when they became just a tyre and exhaust place and didnt want to do any mechanical work.

He owns a lancia delta integrale stripped out track car as a project / toy and loves getting to work on more interesting cars than just changing clutches for knackered old taxis. He's suggested we send the clutch off to CG motorsport in leeds

http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/

They can supply a new clutch cheaper than the £350 that vauxhall want, or alternatively they do custom clutches. May well be worth them rebuilding my clutch stronger as they do bespoke work. Ive actually driven by this place before and they've got 2 Skylines outside all stickied up and they sound mental when fired up, so no doubt they've got silly power to demonstrate their clutches. Their also an authorised Exedy distributor so they should be good.

Anyway, cut a long story short the guy was really enthusiastic, and sounded really knowledgable. Was telling me about the Vectra 3.2 GSI they had in recently that they had to strip down etc.. But he reckons it will be more like £400 - £500 as opposed to £800 and they can collect. Dropped the keys off today and they're picking it up for me and everthying.

May yet get to keep the car as shes calmed down a bit now that the clutch is getting sorted, and not nearly as expensive as what vauxhall were quoting.

Might be hard to do but why don't you make an extra special effort to get the Christmas she want, forget about the car during this period and tell her you can't sell the car over Christmas as you'll get much less for it. Then see what happens in the new year. All of this is based upon the fact that you can do without the car for 4 odd weeks though.

On an aside my wife has never cared about any costs on my car or hers, to her it's just a tool to get from A to B and provided it works when she gets in she's never really bothered to get involved in the annual upkeep costs. Aren't all women like this?

its either bangernomics or keep the vectra.

Or you could keep the Vectra and admit that it might not have been a good idea to ***** a grand on bragging rights.

As said, the running costs, other than the tax, are pretty reasonable really, and your running costs list is really not all that bad. Apart from the £250 (minimum?) remap, and the £800 clutch, which were both your fault.

Perhaps as a gesture of goodwill, you could fix it, sell it privately to potentially get some money back on the remap, trade it in for an 05 model to get the lower tax and recoupe the money that went pop.

That, to me at least, seems like a win-win situation.

This is the thing. We dont know his circumstances (And have no right to) but if its something like this thats influencing her thinking, she has a point.

And if it isn't something like this, she should put up with it.
