not read the whole thread (too damn long). But just get an Accord Type-R. Quick, Saloon (good for family), Japanese (so wont go wrong), reasonable running costs and you get to experience the Vtec-YO! (downside is that the latest model was around 2002 iirc - but that's only a downside if you don't like old cars)
 
Another downside is that it isnt a hatchback which can be a problem when you need to lug big things back from shops.
 
They dont fold down in the type r if i remember correctly, and also you dont have the same size opening to fit the things in the boot in the first place
 
I suspect a 5 series has slightly more room in the boot than an Accord? :)

Besides, seeing as how MrLol's last car was a saloon, I don't think that's a major concern for him. :p

3rd most reliable family car and 9th most reliable car in the UK. I actually looked briefly when buying the vectra but made the mistake of showing the mrs one with fake wood interior - she instantly dislike it. Might take another look at these.

where lack of boot space wasn't an issue.

I bet the bootspace is similar (not huge) and MrLol's vectra has huge space for a saloon/hatchback.

Yea i just meant that whichever shouldn't make a huge difference to running costs really. I think the type-s commands a premium too a bit which makes the executive even more of a no-brainer.

Yea they're quite nice really! and good prices now.

I must say i found the power/performance very similar to the st220 tbh despite it only being 4 cylinder. Refined, quick without "feeling" epic-ly fast but a nice turn of speed between say..40-70 etc. I think they only pull about 30mpg on a run though which is quite bad :(

I've driven 3, one on 10k , one on about 50k and one on 117k and they all felt spot on/similar.

(Sorry i'm a retard who can't quote more than one at a time :( )
