If it was an older mobo he was installing it on and it was switched off but still had power plugged into the PSU it could have easily blowen both the RAM and mobo the same as if he did it when it was switched on.
I've done it on a socket 754 from Asus. For some reason even though it was powered off it was still supplying power to the ram and when I put in the new stick I got a flash and that lovely burning smell. I've also not inserted a ram stick properly in the past as well with pretty much the same result.
I've had similar problems with a motherboard on ebay lately and I ended up giving the guy a refund. Wish I hadn't cause when I got it back I tyied it and it didn't work so
I gave him a refund. Then when I gave it a look a little later the sticker on the bios was a different revision so he had changed the board for his damaged one.
