Hello all,
Right a friend of mine has ask if would be happy to help him with his sons homework project on electronics. What he needs from us as the general public/consumer is an average of what we would normally spend on a new computer or computer build.
Weather it be office based or full on gaming machine. He is doing this at GCSE level and his dad has said if he gets a B or above give him some £££.

So if you guys could be kind enough to help me on this for him will be fantastic!
His questions he would like answered:

What is a amount you would spend on a new computer?

Computer use? Office/Gaming/multimedia/combined?

How long would you keep you computer for before replacing? 1-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-6 years, 7 years+

How many hours a week do you spend on your home computer?

Thank you guys all the help will be great!

Bit silly questions, how much would I spend? Well, if money had no value then I'd spend upwards of 20k?

1) 3k probably.
2) All
3) Depends on the parts, 1-2 years perhaps but the CPU will last 4 etcetera.
4) 100's, 15 hoursish a day.

I spend between £2k-£3k on each build, every 18months to 2 years not incliding monitors. I use my PC for gaming, work and various other things. I spend upwards of 10-15 hours a week on my home PC and about the same on my laptop.

1) 2k tops unless it what some super pc which did loads of cool things ;)

2) everything, mostly work and gaming

3) probably 3-4 unless my pc was really falling behind

4) about 15 hours

Happy to help :)

Thanks for the replies guys keep them coming. As for the Hyburnate on ( if money had no value then I'd spend upwards of 20k) I have asked him on this and he said he wants it realistic figure.
That is my fault for not putting that in.

1) £3.4k was the price of the last build
2) Mainly gaming with some rendering work / fraps etc
3) On average every two years though this one will be four
4) 30ish hours a week

1. Maximum of around £1.5k
2. Mainly gaming/general browsing/TV
3. 3-4 years usually.
4. For the last two years 0 hours, but when I'm living in the UK I'd say around 25 hours.

1) £1K (initially, more on upgrades over time)
2) Gaming/multimedia
3) 3-4 years
4) Around 15 hours (on average)

results might be a little skewed, this is an enthusiasts forum after all....

1.i'd probably draw the line at £1.5k depending on funds, obviously if I won the lottery the sky is the limit

2.combination of CAD, office, watching cat videos and gaming [gaming being biggest chunk]

3.historically, about 8 years [shocking I know] although I intend to try and keep more up to date now.

4.about half my waking hours, so whatever that works out at in a week.

A 'normal' build for my own or someone else's office/combination machine:
£800 for the box on the floor. Assuming already have peripherals.
Expect 3years, but any extra is bonus. Maybe upgrade along the way a bit (HDD > SSD), but keep it going until it's too slow.
Not sure on the hours, so guessing at 25.

My gaming PC:
£2K for the box on the floor. Assuming already have peripherals.
Expect 3-5years, but any extra is bonus. Maybe upgrade along the way a bit (HDD > SSD), but keep it going until it's too slow.
Not many hours, do most stuff on the laptop instead. Guessing at 10.

I'm not sure that we're exactly a representative survey sample though!

1. 1-1.5K
2. Gaming, multimedia and work (student)
3. I tend to upgrade something at least once a year.
4. Around 30-40, varies though.

1. £800 - £1k
2. Photo and video editing. Very occasional gaming.
3. 2-3 years unless usage requires specific update.
4. 20-30, varies depending on amount of photos video taken.
