H&M Racism storm

Crazy but I guess to be expected today and their marketing team should have picked up on it.

Still think its more the people who are offended projecting their own connotations of the word "monkey", majority of people will just think cheeky kid.

All these social media outrages could well backfire and find companies playing things safe and just using white kids for the majority of modelling and go back to adding the token minority kid to tick a box.

You don’t have to even go that far, aren’t bananas still thrown at black footballers every now and again?

Good source of potassium and carbohydrates! It'll enhance their performance.

However Yeah, don't think it's done over here but rather in certain crap hole countries with completely backwards attitudes.

I wasn't offended by the hoody but could straight away see that some would be and certainly some would use the term offensively or get a twisted kick out of seeing it on a black kid. As has been said though I just see it as a term of endearment for kids.

With that user name I hope you arent black!

Once I'd stopped laughing it seems like a silly oversite on h&ms part. Did the kids parents/photographer/web designer not say "hang on this could look a bit dodgy lets not use a black kid"?

More offense from people taking things out of context. Context seems less and less important by the day. The worst thing is companies just immediately capitulate and roll over even though there was no intention to cause offense. If there was an intention to be racist then people should be fired and prosecuted, if there wasn't then the advert should be left as it is.

Unfortunately monkey / gorilla are well documented terms used to racially abuse black people.

guess we're lucky no one kicked up over xmas then, what w/ all the pics of white kids pulling crackers.

seems to me a lot of racism is in the eye of the beholder. reminds me of Marilyn Manson's comments about the pics of him as a kid that he wanted to put on an album cover.

I always call my kids little monkeys, my daughters friend is black, called her a little monkey once and was worried in case it was taken the wrong way.

Stupid world we live in where people are always living in fear of offending someone. I am tempted to take the photo, white the kid up and re-release it, see what happens then :D

You'd think H&M's marketing department could have picked this up before it went live. It doesn't take a genius to realise that the implications might be offensive.

That depends on the age involved. Spoke about this at work, the older staff saw the problem, anyone under 25 wasn't aware that black people used to be referred to as monkey's

IMO it probably wasn't the best thing to do and I feel there was always going to be a bit of a backlash, however, to say H&M are racist I think is wrong as I doubt they are and I also feel that while ever people are looking for racism things will never move forward.

I'm sure no racism was intended. However it was more than a little myopic of H&M to make this advert in this way.

This is what i believe happened. I think so many people involved were colour blind that they didn't noticed how this could be perceived in the outside world. From the photoshoot itself onwards, heck the mother must have been their in the photoshoot so if she was ok with it then it shows it just didn't occur to anyone

Oh look another SJW story scandal, they all follow the same formula so getting a bit boring now.
1: Somebody releases or says something that's not really racist or sexist but could be if taken out of context or misconstrued.
2: Ten SJW's on twitter complain and call for boycotts/ public executions etc. of people behind step 1, most people don't care
3: Now the media reports on the latest 'scandal' using the 10 said tweets as examples, blowing the whole thing out of proportion makes it sound like the whole of twitter is complaining about it.
4. Then the rabid anti-sjw's get hold of it who seem to be the most offended of all and share it even more so the story get's even bigger. Will then complain about younger generation, will often use the terms '*********', 'back in my day' 'is this what the world is coming too?'
5: The people who don't really care (which is most) shake their heads and move on with their lives
6: The 'scandal' dies down and starts with another step 1 a couple of weeks later.
