H80i REALLY high temps on stock.

Have a search around, I know this is the H60 but they are all effectively the same.

Not read through it all but it seems to suggest the loose fit is designed to be like that. There are other posts out there suggesting its designed to be like that but also others that contradict

I really don't know what to believe to be honset, all I know is I left it loose and tightened it all up and its very tight and my temps are fine. 28 degrees most of the time on idle and not really seen it go above 40 degrees while gaming.

I've just fitted a H80i this morning to an Intel 3970X Hex Core and just using the supplied TIM that's pre-applied, it idles at 29 and loads at 53. Room temp 23. Quite impressed with this cooler.

Sorry if I've missed it but you have connected the USB lead to CPU block and the SATA power?

Try doing it the corsair way at first but if it doesn't work and you get higher temps try it my way. Just search for H80i loose backplate or H100i loose back plate and you will find plenty of people who had the same issue and fixed it my way. This only affects the new Hydo coolers as far as im aware.

Yeah it lit up and I can use link to change the leds etc. Just playhing diablo 3 then reached 60c and im all stock.

re-seated and issue gone. the heatsink was only half on, there are some parts close to the cpu and the heatsink was sitting on them and missing more than half the cpu.

now stable at 4.2ghz and on load doesnt break 60c

Will have to give your way a try, there does seem to be some free play under the motherboard on my H100i backplate.

Good news!

I would be very careful shimming the backing plate. I'm under the impression the object of the backing plate is to put the pressure behind the CPU and not on the mounting holes in motherboard.

I just fitted one of these this weekend. Working well here, but it does appear that the limited amount of play that you get in the back plate is supposed to be there. I wouldn't start shimming it if I were you.

If you do it my way it works exactly like the corsair way except the pump unit gets a few mm closer to the cpu resulting in better temps.

Seems you sorted out your issue, at first I had some high temps with my H80i too then I read around and found out that taking the plastic thing off the backplate is the wrong thing to do. I emailed Corsair and they sent me a new backplate (for free) and I mounted it with the plastic cover and everything is fine now, idle at 27c. I also used some MX2 thermal paste which is great.
