Had enough of boss.

Sound more like your only angry because you have to work on the 2 days that your partner has off...

Which is not your bosses problem..

If your not happy with it..then maybe best to find another partner...

It sounds like there's kids involved if he can only work when his partner is off...

Then surely the store hours are 9-5.30 but your wife's job is 8.30-5.45? That's a lot of unpaid hours she's missing out on!

Key to that is, 'was' ;) Yea, it's pathetic. She may have been paid 8.45-5.30 so 15mins each end, seems more like it. Even so, I always used to say it was a joke. You either get paid or you don't bother.

At my current job I arrive 2 minutes early, clck in and then head up to clock out a 2 minutes too the hour. No more, no less, any work i'm doing is dropped as I'm not being paid for it. If you're more senior than a general dogs body/paid a salary then it's different, however if you are not then there really is no point, especially considering you have to get to and from work (unpaid) as well.

I hate it when managers make you feel guilty for not doing overtime... I don't want my job to be my life... If they want the work done, they can work their days off and get it done!
They'd be rubbish managers if they couldn't get people to do overtime when overtime is needed.

I know of one place which has to get people to do overtime almost all week just to run understaffed :D

Everyones job can be like that mate, just have to bare with it, I am suppose to work 7am - 3pm I rarely get home for 8pm, its part of the job... and I'm glad that I have one in the current climate....

I also don't work my contracted hours (am supposed to do 8 I probably do 10 or so) - but I'm in a skilled position and have an annual salary - my pay increases are dictated (within reason) by my manager and so its in my interests to perform well and do that bit extra - there are no standard pay grades or any of that stuff.

The difference with the OP is that he is in an unskilled role, paid by the hour - doing any extra work for free is probably a bit of a wasted effort if its some national chain of petrol stations belonging to a big oil company then pay is probably standardised.

Look at it this way, if you're working a couple of shifts a week in an unskilled role on the only days your partner has off then you probably don't have too much cash - the little bit extra for staying late each shift probably does add up, assuming say £8 an hour so £2 quid extra per shift so £4 per week you'd be looking at losing just under £200 a year* from not getting that bit extra to lock up anymore - if you're struggling financially then £200 makes a difference.

*dependent on tax/tax credits etc...

sounds like my lab. People stay til the work's done, otherwise you'll have to do it in the morning, which of course throws off the next day... endless cycle. Then again, different situation. Also, if I do overtime I get paid a good rate. Again, different situation.

Hmm. Trying to think of something that doesn't make it look like I'm rubbing it in your face.

Hang in there.

I would look at your contract mate to be honest... too see if you have any buzz words like 'reasonable' in it...

True, it is November and quite chilly out there...

(Sorry I hate that phrase, it's used way too much by scare mongerers and anyone trying to make a "point" or sack someone for something not remotely related to the downturn)

Just take a wild swing at them.

Or alternatively take your boss somewhere there are no cameras (maybe the toilet), block the door and then start swinging at yourself until you have some nice cuts and bruises, then stagger into the camera view. Finally get your boss well and truly ********* and claim compensation using the camera's "Evidence"...:p

Seconded. 15 minutes aint gonna kill you tbh.
But if he is giving you trouble over other things, perhaps you should speak to him about it as opposed to let it build up inside you?

So you do 5 hours unpaid work per day?

Are you a petrol station attendant on minimum wage?

If so, then you are a complete mug.

If not, then its pretty irrelevent.

If he was being paid £50k a year to do something reasonably important then suck it up, its what happens at that level. But he's a minimum wage shop worker, he isnt paid enough to put up with anything other than basic 'You work these hours, for this money' stuff.

Stuff that, used to do that when I worked retial. Used to put down on the shifts 2-finish!

Didn't think it was quite right but was 16 and needed the money.

Though any other time, I left when my shift was meant to. They had to close a few times, waiting on other staff, because of it. But if management is that stupid to not organise their shift paterns then thats their problem not yours.

This is my philosophy too. They wanna promote me to Team Leader/Manager, I'll do the extra time to get things done if needs be, along with a payrise, kthx.

17 hours a week? You call that a job? I did more than that when i was 14 doing a paperound.

Why do you work so little?

EDIT : reread info on your post. Why can you only work on her days off?

TBH i wouldnt want you working for me if you could only do 17 hours a week.

What's your problem? They're not you, how hard is that to understand?

Just because you did or didn't do something doesn't set a datum for what everyone else has to do.

Oh noes, he "only" works 17 hours a week, and what? Lucky you're not in charge of them isn't it?

I bet you've got a brown ring around your neck.

Reading this thread makes me glad that we are in the EU and can easily employ Eastern European workers :D

You mean so you can take advantage of them by making them work for longer than you pay them?

Even though I hate my job and will leave at the earliest chance I still work hard and have very little chatting time (as that is what I am paid for), however I'm not going to work extra time for no pay. If however the sign in and out machine rounded to the nearest minute or even 10 I would probably work until my job was done (if it was only 10-20 mins), however it rounds down to the nearest hour so there is no way I'm doing that!...

How long are you planning on sticking around for?

I really dislike my job, but it's very much eyes on the goal for me too. I should be hitting the job-hunting trail again in the New Year. I'm not expecting much, but at least I'm a little rested again. I think if I've still not managed to pass GO by 25 (which isn't that far off now really), I'm going to lose it.

I worked at Tesco for a few months, they took me on part time but were constantly asking me to do more. The thing is if I had a contract I would be on more money and the hours would be regular.

They were just trying to make me do all the shifts no one else wanted and work times when I said I couldn't.

I packed it in with no notice in the end. Haha, I know that must have caused some chaos as I was constantly bailing them out the poo.

I wouldprobably just try and keep cool but at the same time stick to my guns, don;t get angry with him but don't do anything you dont have to.

Its a poor manager who overly relies on the increasing flexibility of the staff for their targets to be met. All that says to me is that they cant manage for ****.
