Half Life 2 mods

Anyone ever play Sven Co-op for HL1? What a great mod that was. So fun with my mates. I really hope they sort out one for HL2. Theres was an abundance of co-op maps released for it too, unofficial and official.

Sven Co-op was THE most awesome mod for HL! I really cannot recall how many hours me and my mate spent playing that!

Truly amazing :) And co-op funnily enough!

EVERYONE knows about svenco-op, it was simply immense :p
The amount of time spent on it with my mates, that stupid RPG map that was actually incredibly boring, but the fact it was RPG.... with SWORDS.

Anyone ever play suprise mod for hl1? All weapons had another 2-3 functions, some of them were plain silly. It was quite a laugh, only about 800k or something too!

Good to see I wasn't the only one :P

How about Firearms? That game had about 40 different guns to pick from. The gameplay itself wasn't the best really. Not a great deal of balance considered when it came down to the guns, and the player models and general map quality was a bit lacking I thought. Still fun from time to time though

yea firearms was good, but it went crap when recoil got added.
Was there really that many guns? =/

Science and industry, another amazing mod ruined by recoil :P
Such a brilliant unique idea for a game, really fun.

Nar it wasn't 40. It was more like 25-30 but it seemed like a daunting decision when picking your gun

It would be a let down if the name of the game wasn't the main attention of the developers I suppose :D

Black Mesa Source looks really good - love the theme music for it :p just a shame there's been no official new news on the site since last christmas !!

Used to play Firearms for a clan about 8/9 years ago - was one of my favourite mods along side the original Day of Defeat!

On the subject of Day of Defeat. Does anyone remember during the development process when they scrapped the whole thing and started again? I remember there being lots of concept art before release but never any in game footage. About a year into development they scrapped it all

I remember there was a big ho-har over someone leaking the alpha version back in 2000 (i think it was). The strangest scenario ever was I was on some irc network downloading mp3s when I came across a public FTP. I opened it up and there was Dod Alpha 6.7.exe sitting there. Played it offline with my brother on lan around christmas eve and it was so buggy. The thompson, after reloading the 2nd mag would bug out and you have would have infinite ammo to shoot with. Good stuff!

I loved that game nearly as much as early counter-strike. 1 shot kill Garand with hardly any recoil and sniper rifles with about 15 bullets in before a mag change :D I absolutely adored the map Hill too. Man that was fun. Running along the slopey terrain with mortars going off and germans shooting at you from across the map.

I checked the Dod and CS websites once a day to see if there was any updates for any upcoming beta releases. They usually have little screenshots and playtests which got me excited as a kid :D Ha

Just found this on wikipedia:

The 'theme' menu music was composed by Michael G. Shapiro, who also did the various victory themes, even using real bagpipes for the British victory theme. Michael G. Shapiro is also the voice of the G-Man in the Half-Life series.

Hill was such an awesome map - as you say it was great to snipe with as the germans with that crazy rifle they had, and trying to sneak slowly forward as allies up to that house or along the left or right hand banks ... good times!

Shame no one ever released a properly re-done version for the source version - I do remember getting hold of a new version but it wasn't a scratch on the original...

Yes! I used to love that, loads of people fighting together against those huge boss baddies. Some of those battles were epic. I remember their site said they were doing one for hl2 and it has screenies and skins but I never saw it released.

Reading on wikipedia about valve taking a decision to remove the dark maps based on player activity probably was a good idea but surely having one darkish map could have been beneficial on the source engine. Better lighting and all that malarkey

I say add the british and russian into source to spice things up a bit!

One of the best parts of that game was the player models. Absolutely genius. Whether it was a warhammer character, alien xenomorph, aliens marine, homer simpson, the punisher, you name it, it was in there. Made it that little bit more fun

Just on hl2 mods - Portal: Prelude is out in under 2 weeks. More info here: http://www.portalprelude.com/

Portal Prelude looks very promising. Will give that a try when it's out. Apparently Valve are making their own prequel of Portal but that is further off

Another mod I remembered is Natural Selection (NS) which I loved when it first came out, haven't really touched it for a while though so can't say about the latest version (final one too I think).

Tis a shame they decided to move away from making it for source - they've ended up doing their own engine complete from the ground up!

Natural selection was good.

Other fun mods like garrys mod also good to try. Google half life 2 mods there are some good websites.

Natural selection was one of the best made mods I've ever played. Very well done. It was like stepping into a different engine (not graphically better but the design aspect was a mile away from the original half life)

That game needed a great commander though to drop down supplies and supply waypoints etc. Without one you were pretty much screwed and in turn ruined the whole experience. One of my friends was in a clan who were the best in the UK and he was amazing with the marine pistol :D

It was always a last resort considering you had hundreds of ammo in that sub machine gun thingy me bob

They are making a completely separate game now from the HL2 engine but I have no idea how well they are moving along.
