Well im thinking of getting the but i'm not sure which version to get.

There are loads of different packages and i'm wondering which is the best?

HL2: ?

HL2: Game of the year?

HL2: Source?

HL2 complete pack?

Thanks.

It depends on what you want to play. HL2, CS: Source and DOD: Source are must-haves IMO.

I want HL2, and want to play it on line.

What's the other stuff like?

Counter Strike & Day of Defeat? Are they full games, or mods to play on line?

Can i only get source from steam, and does it have to be downloaded?

Cheers.

CS:S and DoD:S are both mods of half life 2, just like CS and DoD are mods of Half Life.

They're very very good games, more or less seperate games in their own right and definitely worth your dollar. They're both online experiences and wont offer anything decent in terms of single player.

I think you can get source on disk if you buy it bundled in a HL2 pack (I think it's game of the year edition) from a store.

Counter Strike: Source and Day Of Defeat: Source are basically official multiplayer mods for Half Life 2. They're bloody cracking, much better than the standard Half Life 2: Deathmatch multiplayer (though you can throw toilets at people in that.) :D

Edit: Zefan beat me to it. :)

I would just purchase them through Steam, it's usually cheaper than shops (especially certain rip-off ones I could name) but you don't get the luxury of discs and a box.

If you go to www.steampowered.com you can download the Steam client (free) and browse the catalogue. They have lots of options to download stuff individually or in packs to save money.

So there off line games as well.

So the source pack is basically 3 games for £30? ($60)

Aye, am looking on the site at the moment.

My option really is the Source pack for $60, or GOTY for about £25, should i just go source from steam?

PS: what would happen if download didn't work, can i re-DL it?

You can get the Source Premier Pack on Steam for $60. :p Includes: -

Half Life: Source
Half Life Death Match: Source
Half Life 2
Half Life 2: Deathmatch
Half Life 2: Lost Coast
Half Life 2: Episode One
Counter Strike: Source
Day Of Defeat: Source

Winner! :D

To answer your question you can re-download them if they don't work and they automatically update themselves with all the latest patches etc. :)

Yes you pay for the key, you can DL it as many times as you like on to as many PC's as you like :)

Right, so really just a bonus for on line gaming.

But it does come with Episode 1 in toe.

What about the complete pack, worth it?

Not a clue, have a look around to work out what pack has what stuff in it.

Or just see above :p

It's all in my SteamFAQ in sig, but:

If you're buying over Steam, and you don't spending a little more, I'd say go for the Source Complete pack, as it has all of the multiplayer Source based games, (where Source being the engine used by Half-Life 2).
http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=package&SubId=80&

Also, it's nice if you have not played Half-Life before to play through Half-Life: Source, which is a converted version of Half-Life 1 on the Source engine, which is nice if you have not played Half-Life 1 before.

Remember to add 17.5% VAT to whatever purchase you make, as that is not shwn on Steam. So $59.95 will be around £38. Overall this is the best deal if you're buying new, as you'll probably not be able to get all the games in that package from retail for less than £40, Half-Life 2 Episode One and Day of Defeat: Source together would be £30 to start with.

There's a good lot about the Steam platform in the FAQ in my sig, should answer some questions about it. Whatever you purchase is linked to your Steam account for life, so you just have to make sure you remember and keep your Steam account details safe, and then you can log on on any PC and download and play the games you own without need for discs.

Installing summit from steam right now, will probably go for the game tomorrow, need to check space of creditcard 1st.

Cheers.

DOD:S is one of the best online games ive played ....

none of this prone instant dolphin diving shiz seen in sooo many games..

its probably the hardest to adjust to, but once you get used to its style theres nothing as intense...

$60 for that pack is a bargain ... enjoy

Basically answered it all, again cheers.

Does anyone remember about a year ago someone was making a mod using the HL2 engine basically re-creating the N64's Golden Eye maps to play on line?

This was the reason i wanted HL2 so badly, but forgot all about until the other day, which prompted this thread.

Did it get released, and was it any good?

It was Goldeneye Source, I played it, though only once.

Sorry but i dont get what your on about.

Not a big player of online shooters?

In fact i played COD2 for about 5 hours and that's it.

I used to play HL1 a long time ago, was great but too many slow modems ruined it in the end.

dokko said:
Did most not play it in the end, or was it just a personal pref?
I personally was a Goldeneye hater back in the day, but I think it brought back some memories for people. I don't think it's very popular now, I could be wrong, as it's been out for a while now.
