Half Life 3?

Not wishing to take the thread off topic, but there are a lot more good/great VR games out there. Maybe there isn't a big studio AAA release every five minutes, but playing (say) golf in VR offers gameplay and immersion that cannot be matched with a keyboard and flat screen.
What other games? I haven't bought a vr headset yet, and especially now that you need a VPN to access porn, it's put more off even more. But I would like to get one. I just feel I'd play it for 1 month and then may as well sell it on as it'd gather dust for the rest of its time with me

As I said I don't want to take the thread too far OT, so you might want to post in the VR section of the forum to get into the detail of non Half Life games.

But depending on what you like, Walkabout Mini Golf and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners are both great. Driving and flying simulation games are usually best in VR.

I would very much consider buying a VR headset specifically for Alyx and HL3, but I would do so very begrudgingly. My main gripe is that despite the advancement in the technology compared to early VR headsets (ironically almost entirely spearheaded by Valve themselves and HL Alyx), the adoption rate by developers just seems non-existent, so spending £1k for 2 titles seems ludicrous.

I bought an Oculus Quest solely to play Alyx, and it was totally worth it. Now consider that you can get a used Meta Quest 2 for £155 that will play other games without a PC and it’s not a terrible value proposition. That’s assuming you have a PC to run Alyx.

Why would they? there's 0 chance it'll ever reach the same levels as the hype will require.
the best time to release it was 2 years after half like 2. the second best time would be never.

indeed. but perhaps they found that players are yerning for some old school games that are just fun and simple with a good story. but i'm doubtful

I can't see it myself. didn't we have this before alex? I can see it being another thing like that. spin off, not touching the original story.

How so? Alyx came out of no where after what, a 10+ year gap? And it literally leads into the end of Episode 2. They clearly are not done with the story, and it would make even less sense for them to do that, and then HL3 not continue on from where their most recent game in the franchise left off from.

The issue I would assume is that the game franchise is so old now, and things have moved on. HL3 will likely feel very dated.

But that's not to say they can't so a good job. Kind of like with the newest doom games. Those that enjoy the doom games seem to say they are fun to play

Except Valve are incredibly intentional with their game development, and are rarely dated. HL1 was one of the forerunners of those early narrative-driven FPS games. HL2 introduced groundbreaking physics. Alyx was and still is arguably the peak of VR gaming. Valve aren't ones to sit on their laurels and just come out with some half-assed game for the sake of finishing the story. The rumours suggest HL3 with have some kind of procedural environmental something-or-other. I have no idea how that translates in to game, but I very seriously doubt it will just be a run-of-the-mill FPS game.

because I think most people think of HL3 as following on from HL2, Alyx filled in some story but there's not really the option for that while using GF as the main character.
if we're saying that it doesn't need GF to be HL3 and it doesn't need to follow on from HL2 to be HL3 then we have it already in Alyx.

Not sure I quite get what you're saying @VeNT but that might just be me. Shorter episodes?

It would be a shame if they resumed doing shorter episodes after all this time. And personally think it would be massively weird for HL3 not to be from Gordon's POV. As I've said, wouldn't be surprised if we did get another VR Alyx, but that would also be weird, depending on release date compared to HL3. I doubt they'd stack two stories close together in a release cycle, so I'm gradually talking myself out of that!

Although they have shown they have side stories written (Alyx) -and I hope they don't go off on a tangent before resuming from HL2:EP2- if the story's great ultimately that's the decider. For me.
