Halo 3 Multiplayer - What do I need to know?

Just don't do anything ^he^ does and you will be fine.

But remember that if you buy it, the MP side has a very steep learning curve when playing online and you will get your arse handed to you 90% of the time, which is what puts a lot of people off it because they can't get kills.

No it doesn't. It's one of the easiest pick up and play online games, well out of the main ones I've played (CSS, StarCraft, SFIV). It is unusual in that the weapon you have makes an enormous difference (very poor weapon balance) and it's a very old style of game where you must find and pick up the best weapons to do well but in terms of skill base it's not particularly hard.

Even idiots like me almost always come out positive. Hell, even butterfingers can occasionally kill someone if he luckily spawns by a decent weapon.

Krono, Alrik, you playing tomorrow?

Steep learning curve as in learning what to do and not to do in online matches (e.g. don't let CAD man host :p).

You find me someone new to the game that can get a bomb planted or a flag captured against a half decent team, which is mostly what is left online these days. Most if not all of their games they will be going highly negative.

Having played for around 4 years I know when is the best time to take the flag/get the bomb into the base and I also know which fights I can and can't win so if I'm out numbered I will pull back until my team mates are there to back me up (or use them as bait ;)).

Hell Krono has played longer then me and he still hasn't got to grips with the game. He knows how to do it in his head, but actually putting that plan into action is another story.

I play very frequently so add me for some games, though I've got exams till the 28th so prob. wont be on till then.

Managed to outright trade Madden NFL09 for Halo3 which was pretty cool :/

Sucks how you can't install it to the HD unless you want to gimp the load times :(

If its just for MP just install it, there will always be some idiot who has it installed and everyone has to wait anyway so you might aswell install it too.

*Is one of these idiots :p*
I install it for the noise factor and with the amount of hours I put in I'd eventually have to buy a new disc.

Next week :(

IMO it has great weapon balance, however not all weapons are suited to every combat situation, its a rock, scissors, paper, ninja, fire sort of set up
Some weapons pwn at short range, some pwn at long range some have plenty of ammo some have not enough. If you get the right two you should be able to do well.
However if you grab the plasma pistol and arn't aware of the over shot, or you get Shotgun/pp combo on Valhalla then you will be in for a world of pain.
Also there is finding out about various things like the trick jumps, the number of BR shots to the body before going for the head shot, best grenades to use in a situation, where to camp with the sword... the list goes on.
I think there is a steeper learning curve than games like GRAW which was grab any gun and shoot anything that moves

As alrik says I seem to understand almost everything that needs to be done to play the game well, but... well... you call be butterfingers for a reason.

I think Kreee has it quite right. What weapon combo is better than shotgun/BR, cept maybe sniper.

Who ever picks up duals (cept the mauler)?

Don't get me wrong, a game doesn't need balanced weapons to be enjoyable, but as said above there are weapon combos that are almost universally better than any other pair.

Edit: Shotgun/rockets is crap compared to BR/anything.

Depends on level, and situation. I'd say Rockets/SG is the best combo for defending a flag in most levels (or for going for the grab, but you'll want to drop the SG for something else before leaving the base with the flag)

BR SG is also a good Combo on the PIT (not saying best but it is quite handy)

You'll want a BR in 90% of situations, ergo not balanced.
