Hand in resignation via email?

Talk first over the phone out of courtesy. When you then send the formal email there's absolutely no need for it to be a scanned paper letter - just write the text in the email. Been through similar myself at the beginning of the year.

Hi. as some of you may know. i have found a new job and i am planning to resign.

The problem is my boss is in the other office 300+miles away from the office i work in.

Shall i email him a scanned copy of my resignation letter thats signed and then post the hardcopy by post?

Should i call him and tell him from the phone before emailing him?

By fax, like Phil Collins.

Email him with the chat line number your going to be working on.
Don't forget to tell him your aliases name.

Quick update:

Chatted to my boss on the phone and sounds like he is gutted that i want to leave. said for me to think about it. He said he liked my honesty on why i want to leave. Said that the boss higher up might call me.

He also said all i need to do is email him and the other guy and they will notify HR and get the ball rolling

Well, I am sure he appreciated the call to let him know!
