Hand Luggage on Planes

Baz said:
this appears/seems to be a temporary measure, I am sure it will only last for a few days, the airports could not cope with doing this all the time, people wouldn't travel and the airlines/airports would lose money.

I hope it only lasts for a few days, not travelling again till next year, and i don't agree with some of the things they are asking, like carrying your wallet in a clear bag? and no books. I can understand why, but this is OTT methinks
What if someone got on a plane and blew it up - you'd say "why did they let people carry lyggage when they knew something was up????" They can't win :(

It's only temporary and I'm sure they wouldn't bother if there was no need :)

I agree. They'll be parking tanks at the airport next.

Oh. Hang on...
Hahaha you're funny. (Please don't carry on though, Freefaller's looking for trolls to suspend  )

I'm meant to be flying to Berlin later today and wasn't planning on checking in any baggage, just packing a couple of days clothes into my hand luggage to speed up leaving the airport at the other end (baggage reclaim always seems to take ages).

That idea's gone out the window though!!

To all the people moaning about no hand lugauge on planes, I bet you'd all be complaining a damn site louder if a plane/s got blown out of the sky due to people smuggling explosives in hand lugauge
Public announcment at airport.

"Please will all terrorists go to gate 4A where you will be asked to checkin all explosive devices and firearms to the hold. Any terrorists travelling without explosives and firearms may wish to check out our new store in the duty free area, where you may purchase items for the comfort of yourself and fellow passengers."

I believe the Lockerbie bombing device was in the hold.

And as I said before, El-Al allows hand luggage. Everybody loves to hate the Israelis and how many of their planes have been blown out the sky?

How about all the people who have access to airside at an airport? How easy would it to consider a long term plan to get employed and plant devices on board planes airside? There must be so many holes in airport security that they pick on one that is unlikely to have any longterm effect re anti-terrorism and also has the greatest impact on the traveller.

I'd like to know how the hold security checkin is more secure than the x-ray, luggage hand searches, 'magic' wand scanners and clothing checks that I've been happy to go through the last few years?

Oh!! That's reminded me!

Doesn't Ryanair charge for every item of luggage placed in the hold?

Kerchiiing!!! ;)

Point is they should check hand luggage not ban it completley (I thought they did this anyway?). No way I'd trust my valuables to the baggage handlers.

Thats not a security issue though is it, it's a question of the integerty of the individual employee's. Whats worse your laptop been scratched of you been blow out of the sky?

It's all about perspective

Yes, and we also have checked in online which states that no checked in baggage i allowed and that if we do decide to check baggage in we'll be charged an extra £12.00 or so for them to reprint our boarding card (seems fishy to me as you save no money by checking in online and they wouldnt charge you to do it if you didnt use online checkin).

Anyway, they best waive the fees in this situation or the person on check-in is going to get a bloody good shouting at.

Stupid cheap airlines! (Still, As a student I wouldnt be able to afford trips abroad every month or two any other way...)

Heheee, I like you now :D

absolutely spot on

Omg, are you for real? So now they have to physically hand search each piece of hand luggage? - Please arrive for your flight 24 hours prior to boarding so we can check your luggage? These latest threats were in liquid form - we've had shoe bombs, electrical threats - do you really think it's feasible for airports to be able to check for absolutely everything?

I'd far rather sit bored for 7 hours than suffer the excitement of being blown out of the sky.

It's not an easy task on this forum but you have just won 'ridiculous comment of the day'. Of course they don't want to kill you - blowing your plane out of the sky is just toying with you.

Glad I've just had my annual trip to the states. Don't think I could cope with a 7 hour flight and no book and only BA's always knackered "entertainment" system.

The not taking anything on as hand luggage will only be tempory, until they've decided on a new procedure to get the new threat type checked for. In a couple of weeks it'll be back no normal hopefully, they might just add a couple of extra items to the hold only list.

As has been said, what would you prefer? To be able to use your laptop for a couple of hours, or to be blown out of the sky? Tough one...

True but that was about 20 years ago now and security measures have become a lot more sophisticated since then. Also cargo hold in planes are armour plated as a direct lesson learnt from Lockerbie

Do you know how many attempts at bombing Israeli planes have been foiled? I'm not sure but I would imagine a country such as Israel would have some pretty formidable security procedures in place

So what would you suggest, instead of trying to plug these holes, we should not try as there is more than one? they have taken measures to counter a direct threat that was placed by people detonation IED's stored in hand lugauge.

Me too, but I would like to think that it is pretty sophisitcated. Airport security and emergency infrastructure is one area that is not brushed over. Look at the standard of the fire fighting equipment compared to the normal county fire brigades, for example.

They were trying to detonate explosive onboard aircraft that are in flight and you think they aren't trying to kill you

No I'm quite clearly having a joke for the benefit of the readers.

I didn't say they had to physically search all the bags. It's up to the airlines to decide what to do. Don't have a clue how they'd handle it. My point is baggage handlers (their procedures, whatever) aren't fit to handle hand luggage.

Really?!?! I'm not stupid enough to say my hand luggage is more important than my life, but things shouldn't be in such a state where your valuable stuff is going to come out damaged at the other end because you didn't have a choice of how it was transported.

Fair enough, now you're making sense to me, but this

didn't make any sense at all. They do check it and it's just not feasible for them to be able to check absolutely everything - which would have to be done by hand if the machines they use already don't pick it up. So banning it seems to be the only option imo.

Sadly, this is down the state of affairs we now live in. There's not a lot we can do about it.

I have a good imagination. Bigger bombs planted airside by a worker. ;) God forbid.

Maybe we should be copying them which is what I would hope.

I was hoping for something more longterm (see Israel) with regards to our confidence in airport security other than what on the surface, and only on the surface ;) appears to be a bit of those jerkin limbs again. Why not just stop flights completely for a day in response to a direct threat? I'm sure they did this previously. They certainly cannot ban hand luggage forever without a severe overhaul of the current hold luggage system. They may have to get us in earlier for checkin (again) and screen our kit even better.

I have flown El Al. Most secure I've ever felt on an airline. ;)

I should've been clearer but I did mean that they should check them. I don't know if a physical inspection would be needed or another element to the x-ray, but I'm still opposed to banning hand luggage.

I only see a permanent ban as being remotley feasable if your baggage is secured from damage.

I'm dreading my flights now. I'd rather be bored than dead, but 14 hours on a plane with nowt to do

I'll be rocking back and forth by the time i get off.

You belive everything you read in the paper? Forest Gate and Stockwell illustrate how wrong our intelligence can be.

I wouldl ike to think that as more effiecent armour plating is developed it installed in aircraft

We probably are or they are copying us. But I'm sure the procedures are still pretty impressive

At the moment airport security success rate is at 100%, as in no attacks have gotten past security, to me thats a pretty good reason to be confident in airport security. I think what you are getting at is reducing fear of being attacked, which unfortunatley is only human after hearing reports of attacks being foiled, it's the "what if" feeling that you're probably talking about
