Hand tattoos when working in IT

Fact is most people see tattoos and turn their noses up. To be honest anything out of the ordinary seems to rile IT people not just tattoos; loud shirts, strange choice of car, wrong colour desk tidy. I'm fed up with it and I've got no tats so I've resigned :)

tats are something a lot of common people have these days.... be a sheep and get one I say
I wouldn't say it was a 'common person' thing. Tatoo wearers are sadly stereotyped as 'thugs' or 'working class' - therefore seem unproffesional (rightly or wrongly). Its not suprising they are frowned upon.

I wouldn't get a visable (at work) tatoo for these reasons, even if people who do have tatoos are lucky enough to avoid such discrimination.

I like tattoos in the same way i like hairstyles, some are good, some are bad, some are just a tattoo, i dont see any significance in having one or not having one, personally I work in IT and have a binary tattoo, I also have plans for quite extensive inking over time, but I'll probably always keep it so it can be covered by a long sleeve shirt, while I dont give two hoots about my appearance and how people see me a large amount of the time I understand there are times when first impressions are very important, interviews etc, and as such despite the permanent nature of tattoos I want a way to be able to remove them for a day or whatever. With something like an interview, even if they dont really have a problem with tattoos on employees having one visible when you're making your first impression could go against you

Tattoo threads here are always great, you can almost predict exactly who will say what and what reactionary posts will appear.

Hand tattoos can look cool but there is a fair chance that for many jobs you would be judged on them regardless of how unfair that may seem or how little they impact on your ability to do your job. If it is a concern for you and the job is more important then for pragmatic reasons I'd suggest not to get it but it is up to you since you are the one to have to live with it.

regardless of whether or not it will look good, i dont understand why anyone would make a choice to limit themselves from being accepted in certain places in society.

there are some bars and nightclubs that wouldnt let you in either. I dont understand why getting a tattoo on the hands or face is a good idea, no matter how much you think it might be

Dermablend - it will cover them up totally.

I've just never seen a good tattoo on anyones face or hand, impressive yes but not that i'd say looked good, the only exception is where it's just the end of something bigger, but that's just bad planning really :D

A real tough man would get "child molester" tattoo on his forehead. Then go into bars with the toughest bikers.
When you say tough bikers, you mean those overweight, bearded hybrids who ride twostrokes without exhausts? Naff. If he was real tough, he'd walk into a creche and apply for the job of "manager".

You're looking in the wrong place. :p

Ner not really. I love tats but when I see people with them, well I assume they're a 'bit rough'. Just how it is with me and most people :).

Unless you have tats yourself...

Jon Frost - moron or not, with the magical ability to know what 'most people' think this guy should be listened to....

right?

Not special effects unless I get a bit desperate because the pay isn't too good. Have to see what comes up but it'll be somewhere that doesn't mind if you're not a boring handle cranker.

Hmm, intresting question surely the whole point of tattoos is for them to stand out so what is the point of getting them and then proceeding to keep them out of plain view? Also someone mentioned mahowks, a really good one will look awesome, so I expect the same with tattoos, though have yet to see anything worth it on real people. (ie not something dug up from google)

Or Londonderry ?

Sorry, your pathetic and utterly transparent attempt at trying to rile me has failed, I only type "Derry" because I can't be bothered to use the full name of the city and what people call Londonderry/Derry/Doire/Stroke City/Walled City/Whatever is entirely up to them and makes absolutely no difference to me.

Tattoos don't have to stand out; sure, a lot of people I know with tattoos are exhibitionists but that is down to their personality and has little to do with the tattoo other than it being an outward sign. Equally I know quite a few people who have tattoos that will be hidden from almost everyone, they have them simply because the tattoo has meaning to them.

As for mohawks, a mate has one that is about 1' tall, very very impressive but would be far too much hassle for me to bother with. It only takes him about 15 minutes to get it set he reckons but still too much for me and as for the amount of attention it generates, not at all keen myself.

lots of people will show off their tattoos and wear stuff that reveals them, but that doesnt mean they always want to show them off, some situations it's appropriate, some it's not, and as mentioned some are just for themselves to have
