Handbrake Use With Automatics!

I never use the handbrake when parked at home on a flat gravel drive.

When out I use always use it unless on the flat and remaining in the car.
 
Do you guys wait for the vehicle to be stationary before shifting from say R to D?

I always seem to, not sure why, mechanical sympathy perhaps, but i notice that my partner doesnt. She just blasts back in R and shifts to D while still going (slowly) backwards. Doesnt seem to have blown a box up yet :p

Going from r to d while still in motion is a great for rocking the car out of snow.

On a slush box r to d while still in motion is no problem at all.

Good to know, i dont really know the mechanics of what is happening, i suppose all you are doing is reversing the torque converter impeller inside the fluid coupling, which is fine? :)
 
Don't think I've ever touched the handbrake button in mine (New XF). It applies automatically when I switch to "P" & Turn the engine off, and disables automatically when I switch pack to "D".

Seeing a "P" actually locks the transmission in an auto though, the handbrake doesn't add much extra (other than preventing the car rolling 1/2 inch or so from the slack in the powertrain)
 
Current car applies it automatically when in park.
In older cars I've always applied it anyway despite it doing very little. On the old E32 7-series and the E39 5-series we used to refer to it as the "bing-bar" because all it did was make the car go "bing" when pulled.
 
You should use it. As a side note, it's better to leave the car in Drive (D) and put the hand brake on in traffic than it is slipping it out of neutral and back in. Warming up the trans oil a bit is better than re-engaging the gears causing wear.
