Handing in Notice - Work Question

Nope!

I had to hand my notice in recently to a company I enjoyed working for and also had a great deal of time for all of the guys in the team.

It was a no brainer given the job I was going to had much better prospects and benefits so I knew I had to do it, however actually breaking the news to my boss was another story. He was building the team up and we were on the back of several successful projects so he was fairly gutted and I knew it would make his life harder - however I come first professionally so it had to be done.

I was so much more nervous handing my notice in than going to interviews for my new job, or actually starting the job! :p

All over in the space of a couple of minutes though, just think how fast a day goes never mind a 10 minute conversation. :)

It's something you have to do. if your work indeed won't pay for your studying and is underpaying for it's staff, surely someone somewhere has realised this? many companies experience 'brain drain' and if they can't hire replacements they're doing something wrong somewhere.

Does this ever get easier? Been offered a new job which is much better prospects and a better working enviroment, but leaving will no doubt screw over my current employers as they don't have many engineers at the moment and haven't been able to recruit for ages now.

I know everyone says if it was the other way around they wouldn't think twice about it but still having a concience sucks sometimes.

yea i wonder why that is, move on not your problem they arent competent enough to get engineers in if they are short staffed

Oh dont get me wrong I'm not the best structural engineer or anything, long from it, but they seem to find it hard to recruit.

Also I think they underpay people, judging by the jump in money I'll be getting then they must do.

I have frieds who are Arc Eng grads who can't find a job anywhere... Can they have yours?

If theres a bennefit to leaving then go for it. Your employer wont think twice when cuts come. Do try to leave in good stead so you can always go back if required.

Architectural engineering. According to them, there aren't many structural engineering (which they are qualified for) jobs kicking around. Even with a masters from Strathclyde! But what you're leaving and a grad job are quite different I guess.

Not sure of the ins and outs of the course but Aberdeen is heaving for jobs at the minute. But tell them to apply to Saipem

Will mention to them that Aberdeen is the place to be. Got a fair few friends who have moved up there for grad jobs, but at the same time I have plenty who don't want to move out of Glasgow and there are sod all engineering jobs to be had here.

One pal graduated with a MEng in Triple E and couldn't get a job in Glasgow. Went and did a Msc in Safety Engineering at Aberdeen Uni, two months into the course he was offered a Electrical Engineering grad job in BoD.

I'm a law man, but if I did a engineering degree Aberdeen would be the first place I'd be looking (even though I did say I'd never move back there! (did Secondary school in Westhill)).

Just resigned from a small family co to go and work for the market leader, globally. Massively uncomfortable half hr paid off by garden leave ;).

If you're not leaving to go to main competition but to somewhere that the career option is blatantly better then just do it!

Safety engineering :-/ but yeah not sure about grad jobs but a lot of engineering jobs around at the moment.

WOW  Do it if you think it would be best, but it seems like you've already made your mind up!

Will e-mail you.

I'm still waiting to hear

Well I have an interview with a large oil/gas contractor in aberdeen on monday for a graduate engineering position. Bit nervour but also excited! Any tips would be great ;)

To the OP, I can understand your position, but its your life and it looks like you are making the right decision - good luck!

subsea 7, I dont think it is your current employer because they seem to be taking on quite a few engineers! Ive heard good things about them.

He only went down that route because he couldn't find a job in triple E. In the end, he did so only did a few months of the safety engineering course. He's now a grad electrical engineer. But anyway, enough of getting off topic. I think it's fair to say that if you're an engineer, then Aberdeen is one of the best places to go looking for a job in the country. Shame the city is so bad!
Best of luck with whatever decision you make, and hopefully Max gets some extra treats!

Slambo, where abouts in Aberdeen is it based? I have many friends who work for them in Westhill, none in a grad role but they seem to be pretty good. Best of luck! If it is Westhill, feel free to ask me for any info. Spent a fair bit of time there.

Ahh, a classmate of mine got offered a job down in london for saipem, think it might be structural engineering as well.

Oh man, I really hope I get this job!

Subsea7 are recruiting a lot at the moment and the London office is a lot bigger than the Aberdeen one. Also if you interview is with the hr lass Layla gill she is fit ;)
