I've just seen the first episode of this and thought it was fantastic.

Cast seems quite promising as well:

Main cast

Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, a criminal profiler and hunter of serial killers.
Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, famed forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer.
Caroline Dhavernas as Dr. Alana Bloom, a psychology professor and consultant profiler for the FBI.
Lara Jean Chorostecki as Fredricka "Freddie" Lounds, a tabloid blogger

Recurring

Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Jack Crawford, head of Behavioral Sciences at the FBI and Graham's boss.
Hettienne Park as Beverly Katz, a crime scene investigator specializing in fiber analysis.
Scott Thompson as Jimmy Price, a crime scene investigator specializing in latent fingerprints.
Aaron Abrams as Brian Zeller, a crime scene investigator.
Gina Torres as Bella Crawford, Jack Crawford's wife.
Ellen Greene as Mrs. Komeda, a Boston novelist and friend of Dr. Lecter.
Raúl Esparza as Dr. Frederick Chilton, administrator of Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.
Gillian Anderson as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Lecter's psychotherapist.

Teaser for the series

Watched this yesterday and thought it was good too although it does seem like another one more suited to a mini series, just have to wait and see how it pans out.

It prompted me to have a rewatch of The Silence of the Lambs last night and surprisingly it wasn't as good as i remembered it to be.

I can definitely see where you are coming from, I'm hoping that they have good enough writers on board so that they can keep it fresh.

We know what he is from the films and I'm hoping that this series helps to show us the journey, but like you said it could be more suited to a mini series, as the one thing I don't want it to turn out to be like is The Mentalist, where the writers seem to be unable to bring something new to the show.

There is only so much Red John you can stretch out before people get bored, and need closure on it.

Maybe one or two more seasons after this if there are plans to, and I think that would do nicely.

Watched the first episode yesterday, thought it was brilliant, the best show I've seen NBC produce since Studio 60 and Journeyman. Been looking forward to this for a long time.

As for your worries about it being like other serialised network cop shows:

It is a mini-series. It runs on 13 episodes like a premium cable show. Not 24 like most network shows.

This should help to condense the writing and reduce 'filler'.

That's good to know! I think 13 episodes of well written content, with good pacing far outweighs 22 episodes where content and plot seem stretched.

Quality>>>>Quantity.

I think the problem with the 13 episode format is the wait for the next season is much longer! :( :D

Heh aye, one thing the 22 episode format has is that it last much much longer than that due to all the silly breaks the yanks take with airing them. The ~10 ones are here and gone far too quickly. If it's satisfying and leaves me wanting more i won't mind.

Re: The mentalist - Same thing here with Red John, i think it was the season before the one airing just now that i got annoyed and stopped watching then did the same at the start of this season. Both times i ended up going back to the show though as it's better than most of it's ilk, it could just do with moving to procedural instead. The guy who plays Jane is starting to age quickly now though so not sure how much longer he'll want to do it before trying other things where his boyish grin will fit.

Yea, the breaks they have! Why not just make them smaller seasons and improve the quality of writing instead! They are over quickly, but I always feel the writing is of a much higher quality.

Yea, I've given up on The Mentalist. It had me hooked for the first 3 seasons. Then I was put off by the fact that all we were getting is like a teaspoon full of Red John each season, and then nothing.

It was all either to do with the cult, or just seemingly random cases that didn't really have any or little connection to the Red John story line. I didn't really see any real future, and as you said, he isn't getting any younger, and I can't see him doing it forever.

It was good to begin with, but after I realised that they didn't really know where to take it, I lost interest.

Meh I got a distinct vibe of, he's guessing, but guessing perfectly every time, wheres the, intrigue, wheres the esculation.

Why when he's predicting everything perfectly, could he not realise someone tipped off the guy, and as such, there was only one possibility. Its all a bit, polish with no substance for me so far. Maybe it will be good, maybe not, I just found the first episode very, pointless, there was no detective part of the show, just a guy showing up and magically sensing everything perfectly, of course, except the one blatantly obvious thing which no one even mentioned.

I'll watch another one but kinda feel like a case of every episode being the same, turn up, predict stuff, guy gets eaten, catch the serial killer, miss the serial killer standing next to them in retarded fashion till cliff hanger end of season where they all realise what he is.

Can't remember what the show was called, crazy professor with some mental disorder helps the FBI and the crazy guy and the FBI chick are secretly in love, while he has his own vision style moments but they are talking over the case with a hallucination... yeah, sure, not identical but, same building blocks, different order.

The main thing this, ultimately, cop show missed, was the police work part. I failed to take the logical step whereby, he has a good imagination and aspergers, therefore can only imagine the one way the scenario can play out, and its right every time.... it came across as spoon fed illogical drivel, dressed up in pretty HD and a bit of distracting gore that so many shows seem to be throwing about at the moment.

Dr. Lecter has heavy accent now, odd flow to it too - especially when he delivers longer sentences. Yanks won't notice but does it work for you?

Perception with the chick from She's All That and the dude from Will And Grace?

Episode 2 out now:

Think it is definitely getting more promising. I quite enjoyed the 2nd episode! Seems like a nice way to continue it.

I am going to be weary of the whole serial killer>use insight power>solved type trap that it risks falling into, but I quite like how they are using Hannibal.

Watched the first episode, but not too sure about it. Some parts were really good whilst others just felt flat. Will give it another couple of episodes to settle in, hoping it gets better.

Classic line from episode 2

Hannibal - 'Mr Crawford, you will have to bring your wife next time so I can have you both for Dinner'

Finished Banshee which was very good and started on this...

After one episode I have the same bad feeling about this show as I did with the Following...The first episode of Hannibal had more than enough stupidity to stop me wasting any more time on it. I watched 3 episodes of The Following before jacking it in BTW.

Started Southland instead and really enjoying that.
