Hanns-G HW191D Thread (Now £107.95 @ OcUK)

I have been thinking about getting the Hanns-G but the Acer is so much nice looking for an exta 20 quid, so on Friday (pay day) ill be placing my order :)

The acer looks almost identical. The reason i'm going to get this over the acer is dvi and a lower price.
Dead pixels will always be a problem, especially on cheaper monitors such as these. I've heard of plenty of people getting acers with problems such as white spots on the screen as well as dead pixels.

Has anyone tried movie playback on this monitor?
Apparently thats one of the weak poins of TN film panels, theres often a lot of noise.

According to the widescreen gaming forum, all games that don't support widescreen will either stretch or revert to 4:3 and have bars down the side.

Is it possible to choose which it does?
Can the graphics card software be used to force it to use 4:3 or is this a feature of the monitor?

As I have owned a ws notebook for the last 2 1/2 years and coming up against this.... can only say that ATI card in my notebook, an old 9000, and so I assume the same upwards, has an option to stretch or allow 4:3. Having said that, I'm now using the omega catalyst drivers, and the option is there too, there is also plenty of options for during movie playback whether it puts it back to 4:3, stretches, or just follows source video.

haven't looked at the nvidia version of the omega, but guess it should be there too.

the option for 1:1 mapping and aspect ratio retention is certainly available in graphics card drivers and in other software. However, from what I've been discussing with some people, i dont think it is a reliable way of running the screen at these settings. This means that i dont THINK it actually works on WS format TFT's, you would need the screen to support the option, otherwise no matter what you output from the graphics card, the monitor still scales it up. I've yet to see anyone achieve the ratio retention with software on a TFT which doesnt support it on it's own sadly.

So its stretch or hack if the game doesn't support ws.

Since i'm going to be making a tradeoff here, getting a ws for better film viewing and will have to suffer stretched games, can any owners say if there is any noise in film playback?

What does everyone else do for games without hacks or which don't allow hacks when playing online?
Loads of people seem to have bought the acer, and presumably that doesn't have 1:1 pixel mapping either.

Just got one today. I have tried to do the 1:1 aspect ratio and it will not do it (nvidia) My Belinea worked perfect on same pc and the aspect ration changed fine. It just goes all distorted and i have to revert back to previous settings.
Movie playback is quite noisy, more than i expected. No dead pixels, no smearing in games, nice colours, no backlight bleed.
Worth £150? hell yes.

Sounds ace, I think I'll go for it then. I'm used to a cheapo 14'' TFT so tbh anything is an upgrade. ;) Even if movie playback isn't top-notch, I'm sure it'll beat what I currently have!

I've been looking at all the games I have and games I might hope to get, and they all seem to support widescreen so I'm set. There's a small number that don't have a normal option in-game but can be set by changing a simple txt file, so that's great.

Was that with dvi or vga?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma now, i want to play games and watch movies and its not very good for movies because of the noise and not very good for games because its widescreen...

Thats through DVI. however ive just dropped my brightness down and the movie playback is miles better :) also the fact that it has both dvi and vga is a huge plus point at this price, what a bargain.

Also want to say thanks to overclockers, oredred this at 3.45pm yesterday, it was on my doorstep at 9.30 am this morning, fantastic.

Edit... i can use fraps and record a bit of playback and email it to you if you want. Now its been running for a few hours and ive messed with the settings the movie playback seems fine.

That would be fantastic if you could. Email in trust. ;)

I'm glad to hear it got better with lower brightness. Would you be able to send one with it at its worst i.e high brightness if thats not too much trouble. :)

To anyone thinking of buying this monitor, its now on this week only. Not a great discount but i might take advantage of it...

Hi there,

My brother is interested in getting the same monitor. Could you also e-mail me the fraps recording as well. Is there any extra features such as height adjustment?

Thanks for the mini review mate.

the hann's constast ratio is better too dont forget 500:1vs 700:1

Just Ordered 2. One for my Son one for my brother... birthdays!!

The reason I bought the Hanns over the Acer is purely and simply that my son and brother can have there PC's and Xbox's hooked up together using the DVI and VGA.. The Acer would require swapping of cables which is a nuisance.

Anyway.. looking forward to seeing these. Anyone got anymore pics?

ok they have both arrived and I am really pleased with them. I am happy to report that there are no dead pixels.

The image quality is superb on both the PC and the Xbox360. It has VGA and DVI which is a real bonus.

Played Enemy Territory and Tombraider and both look excellent.

If I didn't have a 2405 and was looking for a Widescreen solution for myself then these would top the list. I absolutely love the slim bezel.

In essence:

Great Price

Great little monitor

Great delivery from OcUK

Lovely Jubbley :D

PS

Pics soon to follow

They look very nice indeed. :)

How do you find the stretching issue with some games... or do all your games support ws resolutions?

There isn't an issue regarding games in WS. I have had the Dell 2405 for well over a year now and I have not ever encountered problems. As I said, we have tried Enemy Territory and Tomb Raider and on the Xbox 360 Fight Night, Oblivion and PGR and they all look superb. Really happy with them to be honest!!!
