My primary hard disk is 250GB SATA-II, I have it partitioned 50GB for OS and the rest is where I install all my games to.

The ideology is that when I have reinstalled my OS in the past, although some games do require re-installation for correct operation, at least I have all my old profiles / configs etc.

My problem is that C is now saying there is only 3.5GB free, whereas D has 76GB free. What software can I use to reallocate that space, if it is possible?

I have used disk cleanup, ccleaner to free up space.

Tempted to backup, reformat as one partition, and reinstall.

Check disk management to see what's actually happening with the space on that drive. Start Menu -> right click Computer -> manage -> disk management.

If it's just unallocated space you might be able to reclaim it there.

Ah I see... I thought you'd just set this up and the partitioning had gone wrong :cool:

I've got 7 on a 64 gig partition and it's only used 25 of those in a year, so something's eating that space. Hibernation file maybe?

I'm not sure of a way to resize partitions when they're that full already.

You can use something like GParted or Partition magic - just make sure you have backups of everything before you try - bad things shouldn't happen but why take the risk?

You might also want to try running WinDirStat. It will show you a graph of all your file sizes - the bigger the coloured box, the bigger the file. You click on it and it tells you what file it is. I find it a great tool for tracking down large files that sometimes wander off on their own!

C drive folders as follows;

Intel = 700KB
NVIDIA = 120MB
Program Files = 516MB
Program Files (x86) = 3.67GB
ProgramData = 1.16GB
Python26 = 47.8MB
Users = 14.4GB
Windows = 19.4GB

Anyway of tracking down and deleting stuff I don't need?

I have used CCleaner, and disk cleaner, restore is at minimum as I have a backup set to one of my other drives once a week.

I would start by looking at what is taking up all your space in the Users folders. Nothing wrong with it being huge if all your music is there or whatever. Though personally I would move your media to the larger partition.

Seconded. WinDirStat is great. Run it on your C partition to see where all the Users space is going. You might be able to get away without repartitioning.

You could also move your page file to the D partition, and disable hibernation if it's turned on and you don't use it.

I have my pagefile on a separate disk.... I will look at disabling hibernation, although I don't use it, and will have a gander at WinDirStat!

Cheers.

EDIT: Although I don't use hibernation, never have, I have gone from 3.5 to 6.5GB free.

WinDirStat worked a treat, now have 19.3GB free...

my youngest lad uses itunes for his ipod, and it seems it has randomly converted songs to .m4a format, 8.4GB to be precise, funny thing is they are songs my son would never listen to, and doesn't have on his ipod, so I need to go into his account and change settings in itunes.

my eldest lad had save the whole 3GB DSTT folder onto his desktop for some reason, so moved that to storage drive and left him a shortcut instead.

found my profile had 1.4GB of temp files just from Nero install.

I have two folders in C:\Windows\

One is called winsxs = 6.4GB, I have read you cannot delete files as it is dll store for running multiple apps and compatibility.

the other is called installer = 4.3GB

I have read it is okay to delete the files in the installer folder, but is there a specific way to do this?

Anyway, gone from 50GB with 3.5GB (7%) free to 19.3GB (38.5%) free, and the possibility of increasing that to 23.6GB (47.2%) free.

Cheers guys.

EDIT: just having a read, and best not to uninstall the installer files, need to do it via windows to only remove the old ones that aren't needed apparently.
