Hard drive Benchmark Tool?

thanks for that.
Ive installed these drivers, rebooted, and re-ran the tools.
Heres the results:

Do you know what might be causing these poor results? I dont know whether to bite the bullit and just setup an RMA? But id rather actually prove its one device or the other.

It looks to me like its Windows Vista's indexing that could be causing it. Have you tried leaving your PC on for quite some time, then try running HD Tune?

*edit* I didnt actually read the OP :o so ignore this post :)

Open HD Tune config and check the block size isn't set at something silly like 4K, try 64KB. Also, set the slider to 'Accurate' - takes longer but gives a better result. I think if you RMA'd it you get it sent back at your expense, if you really want to test if it's faulty use the Samsung test utility. As above, ensure the computer isn't doing much in the background before you start the benchmark.

thanks guys.
Does anyone have any recommendations for making a boot disk?
I've tried using the Win98 boot disk, but it booted and didnt like the CD rom drivers.
I need a nice boot disk that I can stick the HUTIL / ESTool on and run.

You could try a CD image linked from this post:

It works for me anyway. It just has the ESTool on - oh, and the ASUS BIOS update util (by accident rather than design :))

right, Ive used the ultimate boot CD which contains the HTUIL and ESTOOL, and both tests work.

I took the test a few times just to make sure there wasnt any one off results. Here are the screenshots:

What do you guys think?

There are memory and time-out errors so it fails the test. However, it's strange that it passes according to SMART, I would have thought something would show up there if the problems were on the drive. Have you tested the RAM in your PC? A memory error in the host PC may produce those results.

No, ive not recently tested the ram, but its all pretty new stuff.
There are memory diagnostic tools on the Ultimate Boot CD. I really recommend it to anyone.

I'll try these tools when I get home tonight.

You can try a memory tester but the reality is that your computer would probably suffer BSODs if there was a memory problem, the one fail you had on that test also appeared when I tested mine so not sure it matters.

its on test #8 of the latest memtest86, but so far no errors what so ever, which is what im expecting the outcome to be.

I really dont know what to do :(
I dont think theres much in the way of Tech support for Samsung, its not as if I could email them the HDD test results and let them decided whether its on its way out or not.

Maybe I will consider a different hard disk brand :(

No harm in emailing them, the only thing I can see it the dips in the graphs which can happen but it is the slow access times that are the main concern but you've done most tests you can and tried to update what you can.

well, ive emailed both Samsung and one of their RMA support partners and both of them have said nothing in return, except how to use their RMA service, which is pretty crap customer service.

Im inclinded to send both my drives off and see what happens, the worst case is they bill me a few quid for a so called non faulty drive.

It will be interesting to see new hard drive test results too.

Im just about to return these disks when I noticed something, and wondered if it might be causing me my problem.

Ive plugged my second hard disk in (which was part of the raid) and got an average of 50gbs, with lowest of 1.1
In the info windows, both drives are showing different UDMA modes.
It says they're both capable of 7, but one is running on 5 and the other on 6.

Is there a way to change this? could it be the problem?

great news, ive just been issued with two brand new disks!
Thats good news anyway.

Is there any kind of stress test I can put these through?
I did find this which might be useful, but I really want some other peoples opinions if possible.
