Hard drive enclosure

I have given a mate an old USB hard drive enclosure for an IDE hard drive. The last time I used it it was working ok. I took the hard drive out to use in my PC directly.

I gave my mate the enclosure only. He has put a 250 GB drive in the enclosure. The red and green lights are coming on the drive enclosure, we can feel the hard drive spinning and the mini fan is working.

When we plug it into the PC for the first time (tried it on 2 PC's). The PC tells you it has found the hard drive but then after a while it says It could not install the drivers. It does an automatic installation and does not ask where the drivers are located. After the driver installation fails if you check device manager nothing is showing with a ? or a ! and the hard drive is not showing under disk drives. It is also not showing in disk management. If you then try different USB ports you can her the noise being made to indicate you have plugged and unplugged a USB device but again the drive is not showing up anywhere.

Has anybody any ideas what to try? As it is a UBS hard drive enclosure does it mattter if the drive jumpers are on master, slave or cable select?

I have told my mate to try the hard drive in his PC. That way we can test if the hard drive is working ok.

Your suspects are: HDD, enclosure & cable, as you have tried different USB ports.
1. Try HDD in his or your PC again to check it is working OK
2. Jumper settings should be an is with USB but try cable select. Could the a pin have got damaged when you connect HDD?
3. Try different USB cable but I reckon it is 1 or 2 i/e/ the enclosure at fault if 1. is ok.

Do you know what the missing drivers are? you could try installing them manually.
