Hard Drive failing - OcUK said I can't return until it has failed completely! :(

Did the product info page specify it was an import and that all warranty claims had to be made through OCUK?

I wouldn't expect to be sold an imported item without being notified prior.

This.

A critical SMART failure is accepted by manufacturers as evidence of a failing drive. If they didn't, it would rather defeat the object of having the SMART function at all.

And this - it's the whole point of SMART!

Poor show from OcUK so far.

Failing that, send the item back due to being miss-sold a grey import!
I don't think "mis-selling" is really appropriate - grey imports are pretty common with PC component retailers, and there's nothing wrong with them as such. They're certainly not illegal, although manufacturers may get a bit cross when their official distribution channels are bypassed, and they can produce useful cost savings which may or may not be passed on to the customers.

That doesn't mean the retailer can wiggle out of their SoGA obligations however.

All good points made about grey imports; I'm not bothered about it as long as the retailer is happy with dealing with the warranty themselves.

Anyway after contacting the customer support section in the forum I've been given advice to low level format the drive with ES tools and see how it goes from there. If any problems do occur after that an RMA will be initiated. I'm off to do that now, but the calibration retry count has risen up to 87 since yesterday. I hope the low level format fixes it.

I'll keep you updated but thanks for the input and advice, and thanks to OcUK for helping out (even if I did have to go around the houses a little bit to get it! :p) :)

Just a quick update, an RMA has been raised after using customer support in the forum :)

Would like to say a big thanks to OcUK for the excellent customer service!

Why do you have to work VIA the forums to get "excellent customer service" ? They should have been there for you from the word go

I think "excellent customer service" is really stretching things. From reading what you said, they tried their best to avoid having to issue the RMA. With their very quick delivery times and excellent stock levels, it's a shame that OCUK consistently fall short on customer service.

This!!
Not good knowing that as i have used them for years and spent a very considerable amount of money with Oc to know there customer service try and wiggle out there TaC.

Thread revival! I have just been stuff by ocuk regarding one of these HD103SJ's that is out of service area. I remember being told that they would cover the full 3years on these and had one replaced already and now the other has failed. Poor show OCUK! I will find proof this stated but even if I get this sorted I will be looking elsewhere from now on!

I'm sure I've read on the rainforest site about customer problems with that drive which turned out to be a grey import, they ended up suspending the sale of the item while it was investigated.

I'm pretty sure it was those drives as I was hunting round for more storage at the time and read about them.

Maybe it was a dodgy batch that came into the country?

I've RMA'd a Sammy with a certain etailer in the past and they knew the drives were grey imports but honoured the warranty no hassle. In fact all I did was to email in an RMA request and they then authorized it and I sent them the drive freepost
